Known for her stunning five octave voice, melismatic style and elastic talent, Mariah Carey has transformed effortlessly from pop to R&B to Hip Hop and has justified being compared to the likes of Celine Dion and Whitney Houston. In fact she has gone ahead and done them one better by composing her own material as well. This five time Grammy award winner has sold more than 200 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time and winning her the title of the best-selling female artist of the millennium. Here are some of the best Mariah Carey songs (so far).

‘Honey’
From her sixth studio album ‘Butterfly’, this song redefined Carey’s music, pushing her farther into hip-hop than she had gone before and won her two Grammy nominations at the 1998 ceremony.

‘Vision of Love’
The first song from her debut album, it features a slow-dance theme tempo, backing vocals sung by Carey herself, and introduces her usage of the whistle register. The song was named “the Magna Carta of Melisma” by the American Magazine-The New Yorker and won her a Grammy for ...
... Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

‘Shake it Off’
Taken from her tenth studio album ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’, the Mariah Carey Music Video for this song won her a nomination at the 2006 MTV Video Music Award for Best R&B Video. Although it didn't live up to the critics expectations, it turned out to be a major commercial success.

‘One Sweet Day’
In collaboration with the R&B group Boyz II Men, this song features in her fifth album ‘Daydream’. Released as the album’s second single, this Mariah Carey song spent a record sixteen weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100, and remains the longest running number one song in US chart history.

‘Fantasy’
Released as the lead single from her fifth album, ‘Fantasy’ samples the hook from Tom Tom Club's 1982 song Genius of Love. It became the second song in history and the first by a female, to debut at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 list.

‘Love takes time’
This song is often referred to as one of the greatest ballads of the 1990s. In its lyrics, the protagonist laments the loss of a lover and confesses that "love takes time" to heal and that her feelings for her ex-lover remain.

‘Hero’
Lyrically, this song is considered as one of Carey's most inspirational and personal ballads. It won her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1995 and is deemed by many as her signature song.

‘Obsessed’
Regarded as the stand-out track from her 2009 album ‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel’, this song is built around a Thumping Bass line and draws heavy influences from hip hop and R&B music. With the added speculation that the song was targeting Eminem, ‘Obsessed’ became one of the most successful Mariah Carey Music Videos of all time.

‘All I want for Christmas is you’
In this uptempo love song, Carey declares that does not care about Christmas presents or lights and all she wants for Christmas is to be together with her lover for the holidays. The song has been lauded as "one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon".

‘We belong together’
Built on a simple piano arrangement with an understated backbeat, in this song, Mariah Carey pictures a woman's desperation for her former lover to return after their separation and her loneliness after his departure. In the 2006 Grammys, ‘We belong together’ was nominated for all three top categories and won "Best R&B Song" and "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance"
