The Leyland Cypress, also referred to as a Leylandii, is a very fast growing evergreen which is commonly used for hedges and screens. They are used for this purpose because they grow so quickly even in poor soil, block neighbouring gardens from view and buffer the noise from busy main roads and motorways. They thrive in full sun and they grow in any soil condition except for soil which is waterlogged.

If you are looking for a plant which you can use to quickly grow an attractive hedge which will provide you with privacy, why not plant some Leylandii Cypress?

There are several difference types of Leylandii trees, such as:

Green Leylandii

The most common type of Leylandii is the green variety, which was brought back to the UK by Captain CJ Leyland when he returned from a voyage in North America. This is the fastest growing of all the Leylandii and it will grow up to 25 m! It must be regularly trimmed or it can run the risk of growing out of control. You will see it in many back gardens throughout the UK, providing privacy and noise barriers between neighbours.

Castlewellan Gold

Aside from ...
... the common green species of Leylandii tree, there are also golden varieties. These golden types are very popular due to their attractive appearance and their bushier shape. It is a slightly more formal looking hedge than the green Leylandii. They are also thicker and therefore block out more light. Castlewellen Gold is slightly slower-growing than the green variety of Leylandii.

Gold Rider

This is another popular species of gold Leylandii used for hedges in the United Kingdom. It is similar to the Castlewellen variety but it is a slightly different gold colour. It grows slower than the green variety, which is an advantage because it requires less maintenance. It is also the most vibrant colour of all the varieties, with a bright yellow glow that really attracts attention.

These are just a few of the main varieties of Leylandii Cyress, but there are many more other sub-varieties. The type of Leylandii you choose will depend on what colour you like, how fast you want it to grow and the specific requirements of your garden.

The Leylandii Cypress is a popular tree in the United Kingdom for growing hedges. There are several different types of green and gold varieties.
