Negotiation Examples

These days I find lot of people talking about negotiation techniques, negotiation skills, strategies and a lot more similar topics. But what is negotiation exactly? How do you do it? How can you learn to enhance this skill further? It is simple. I am not going to refer to you any books or will ask you to register yourself in any negotiation classes. All I strive to do is give you some practical negotiation examples from life and help you find yourself a better deal!

Before we begin, let’s talk about why Negotiation? Believe it or not, negotiation role plays to be the deciding factor in what and how much we achieve in our day to day lives. Negotiation techniques are just not required to win a better salary package or prevail a prospective business opportunity. Right techniques give you a lot more in life. Let me explain to you with an example. A friend of mine from Gurgaon wanted to sell his property in Hyderabad. To ease down this tedious task, he hired an agent. Now this agent firstly managed to convince my friend that he is quoting a rate much higher than the current property rate of that area. And that he will have ...
... to lower down the rates and will have to share a good amount of money with the agent as his commission. My poor friend was in hurry and agreed to do the same. After just ten days of his return, we came to know about another property that was being sold by the same agent at the price much higher and the commission far less! Why do you think this happened? The reason is simple; my dear friend could not negotiate while the other party did!

Taking this example let’s find out why my friend could not negotiate! Firstly, he was not informed! When the agent evaluated his property, he did not cross checked whether the information he is being provided with is right or not. So the prime reason for inability to negotiate is LACK OF KNOWLEDGE.

The second reason that kept him away from the negotiations was his preference. At that particular time, he was in a hurry and therefore could not afford to lose an agent by entangling negotiations and find a new one. The second point about negotiation we learn from here is never opt to negotiate when you’re in any compromising situation. The other party ought to take your advantage.

Thirdly, he did not speak to any other negotiators.(Agents in this case) Had he done so, he would have had an idea of what he should expect during finalizing the deal. And he would not have agreed to pay a hefty amount as commission.

Now he is in Vizag and we often talk about how good that deal would have been only if he would have negotiated it further! But now, nothing can be done. However, what we get to understand from this example is; for a good negotiation to take place
1. you have to be adequately informed
2. you have to understand your weaknesses, strengths and priorities and should make a deliberate use of all three to achieve the needful
3. Speak to other negotiators before playing your role. Speaking to others give you an opportunity to think about the points which you might have missed.
