Beautiful Lake Havasu, Arizona can be found behind the Parker Dam along the Colorado River. Lake Havasu itself is located on the border between the states of California and Arizona. The size of the lake is 648,000 acres. The dam was built between 1934 and 1938.
Lake Havasu was primarily built to pump water into two aqueducts, but it has since become a popular recreational lake as well. Today Lake Havasu has become known as an excellent source for boating and fishing. About 3.5 million boaters a year visit Lake Havasu. Throughout the year the lake hosts a number of fishing tournaments. The main focus is on bass and stripers. The lake is stocked regularly with black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, largemouth bass, rainbow trout and striped bass. There are even a few sturgeon that were stock in the lake between 1967 and 1968 from San Pablo Bay, California. ... boaters visit the lake each year to enjoy the landmark London Bridge. This bridge was originally built over the River Thames in London in 1825. In 1962 when it was discovered that heavy traffic was sinking the bridge it was sold at auction to Robert McCullock who founded Lake Havasu. The bridge was then moved to the lake and reassembled. The bridge now connects the city on the shore of the lake to a island that features a resort, restaurants and a beautiful golf course.
If you prefer to watch water sports then you can view many competitions and exhibits year round at Lake Havasu. The most popular is the International Jet Sport Association's World Finals. This is an annual event that is compared to the Super Bowel of personal watercraft and jet ski racing.
If you want to actually participate in your own water sports then Lake Havasu is the perfect place for you. Whether you bring your own watercraft or rent one from the many dealers on the shore you can participate in any number of water sports including power speed boating, water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, kayaking and house boating. In fact the most dominant activity on this lake is boating, skiing and swimming. Nearly every form of water based recreation can be found on this lake and around it include live music festivals that you can watch from the comfort of your personal pontoon.
If you want something calmer then there are many water based tours you can try. These tours will take you into remote canyons and historic sites around the lake. You can take a guided tour that will show you the paths the original pioneers once took while teaching you about the local geology, flora and fauna. No matter what type of water activity you like you are bound to find something fun and interesting at Lake Havasu.
