Americans Are Vacation Deprived

Americans cannot point to a lack of cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages as the reason they do not take more vacations. Nevertheless Americans take much less vacation time their European or Australian counterparts.

The U.S. ranks among the most vacation deprived countries of the world along with Canada, Japan and South Korea.

Americans are given an average of 14 vacation days annually. Only Japan and South Korea gives its citizens fewer vacation, 11 and 10 respectively. To make matters worse, Americans do not use an average of a little over 14 percent of their vacation days, meaning on average two days go unused each year.

A recent survey found that the following were the primary reasons Americans did not use all their vacation days:
• 34 percent said they could not afford it.
• 15 percent said that they did not plan far enough in advance
• 15 percent said that “work is my life.”

While some people believe that vacation is frowned upon by businesses, 73 percent said that their bosses are supportive of them taking vacation time. 8 percent said that their ...
... bosses frowned on taking vacation time, while 19 percent said that they were not sure how their bosses felt.

There is no law guaranteeing paid vacation leave in the U.S. Americans earn the fewest vacation days and holidays of any major industrialized country. Britain and German workers are guaranteed at least four weeks’ paid vacation. Germans get another 10 paid holiday days off.
