The traditional Indian society believed in the concept of arranged marriages or marriages of convenience in which the responsibility of selecting a match for a person rested entirely with one’s parents. In the yonder days, the families of the bride and the groom-to-be used to play a vital role in the match making process and the consent of the persons involved was not at all taken into account.

Also, in those days, Indian marriages took place strictly within the same caste and community and marriages flouting the accepted societal norms were openly denounced in the society. However, the Indian society has undergone a tremendous change in the last few decades with the traditional value system slowly giving way to Indian marriages across cultures, castes and communities.

The traditional system of arranged marriages has also undergone a change in the past few years as unlike the old days, a lot of matrimonial sites have emerged which have eliminated the involvement of any third party in the process of match making. These sites have enabled individuals and families, who still believe in the traditional value system ...

The Indian marriage rituals can be broadly categorised into three categories, namely, pre-wedding, wedding day and post-wedding rituals. The pre wedding ritual consists of ceremonies like engagement, mehendi and sangeet. Engagement marks the beginning of the marital courtship between the bride and the groom and is often symbolized by an exchange of rings between the couple.Wedding day sees the unison of two lives whereas the post wedding ritual consists mainly of a celebration of the marital relationship followed by a romantic vacation taken up by the couple.

Indian marriages are considered to be lasting for seven births and is solemnised by the couple by taking seven rounds around the Fire God during the marriage ceremony. Each round carries a vow which is to be kept by the couple for the rest of their married lives.Several folklores and legends are intertwined with the Indian culture in order to keep up the sanctity of the institution of marriage.
