As much as serious travelers love purchasing cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms or cheap vacation packages, they hate losing frequent flier miles that they previously earned.

Although Delta Air Line and Alaska Airlines miles currently do not expire, most airlines miles expire after an account is inactive for 12 to 18 months. The shortest expiration window is Sprit Airlines whose miles disappear after three months of inactivity.

The following are ways of keeping your airline miles current without using an airline credit card:

• Sign up with an airlines’ dining for miles program and then eat at one of the airlines participating restaurants.

• Shop online through airlines’ shopping mall programs. Over 400 online retailers participate including Ann Taylor, Drugstore, JC Penney, PETCO, and Walmart. Even when shoppers do not use an airline credit card, they can earn between 1 to 12 bonus miles (sometimes even more) for each dollar spent.

• When making a hotel reservation, provide your frequent flier number. If you forget, often you can still earn miles by providing your account information when checking in.

• Sending flowers is another easy way to earn miles. FTD Gifts and Flowers is one of several companies that award airline miles from most airlines.

• Airlines offer serious mileage bonuses when customers reserve cruises or vacation packages through airline websites.

• Select airlines, including United, are offering major mileage bonuses when you take out a mortgage. United miles can be earned with a mortgage from Chase bank.

• Signing up for Netflix can earn miles from a number of airlines.

• Extending Verizon or ATT wireless contracts for another two years through specific airline websites earns bonus miles.

• Donating to charities, including USO, Unicef, or cancer research (as much as 10 miles per dollar donated) through American Airlines website earns miles and keeps existing miles current.
