Calcitriol may be preferable to ergocalciferol in the acute treatment of hypocalcemia because of its faster onset of action. Calcitriol is also preferable to calcifediol in the management of hypocalcemia in dialysis-dependent renal failure patients because calcifediol must be activated by healthy kidneys to be effective. Calcitriol is also indicated for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism and the resultant metabolic bone disease in chronic renal failure patients who are not receiving dialysis. Calcitriol is used to treat hyperparathyroidism and metabolic bone disease in people who have chronic kidney failure and are not receiving dialysis. Calcitriol is also used to treat calcium deficiency (hypocalcemia) and metabolic bone disease in people who are receiving dialysis. Calcitriol is also used to treat calcium deficiency in people with hypoparathyroidism (underactive parathyroid glands) caused by surgery, disease, or other conditions.Calcitriol is vitamin D3.

Precaution and Warning while taking Calcitriol:-


The precaution and warnings of Calcitriol drug is as follows:

•Instruct patient to carefully follow the diet and calcium supplementation instructions supplied by health care provider.
•Advise patient to take prescribed dose without regard to meals but to take with food if GI upset occurs.
•Advise patient or caregiver using oral solution to use disposable graduated oral dispensers supplied with medication.
•Instruct dialysis patient to avoid using any magnesium-containing products (eg, antacids).
•Educate patient regarding signs and symptoms of hypercalcemia. Instruct patient to immediately inform health care provider if they occur.
•Advise women to notify health care provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Calcitriol, a pharmaceutical form of vitamin D, has anti-osteoporotic, immunomodulatory, anticarcinogenic, antipsoriatic, antioxidant, and mood-modulatory activities. Calcitriol has been found to be effective in the treatment of psoriasis when applied topically. Calcitriol has been found to induce differentiation and/or inhibit cell proliferation in a number of malignant cell lines including human prostate cancer cells. Vitamin D deficiency has long been suspected to increase the susceptibility to tuberculosis. The active form of Calcitriol, 1,25 (OH)2 D, has been found to enhance the ability of mononuclear phagocytes to suppress the intracellular growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. 1,25(OH)2D has demonstrated beneficial effects in animal models of such autoimmune diseases as rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin D appears to demonstrate both immune-enhancing and immunosuppressive effects.

Calcitriol comes as a capsule and a solution (liquid) to take by mouth. It usually is taken once a day or once every other day in the morning with or without food.Calcitriol has also been found to induce monocyte differentiation and to inhibit lymphocyte proliferation and production of cytokines,including interleukin IL-1 and IL-2, as well as to suppress immunoglobulin secretion by B lymphocytes.
