There Are A Few Different Methods For How To Block A Website
Some business managers may find themselves in a situation where they need to know how to block a website. This is particularly true when business owners or managers are faced with the problem of employees wasting time on inappropriate websites during working hours or when employees are distracted by social media sites during the workday and end up not being as productive as their employers would like them to be.
There are a few different methods for how to block a website, and those can be either hardware or software solutions. One common technique is to block certain websites at the firewall. Since new websites are constantly being developed, a company interested in blocking sites at the firewall would need to subscribe to a service that groups websites into categories, and then certain categories of sites can be blocked. Unfortunately, all too many times Internet blocking ends up blocking sites that ARE appropriate, and sometimes even sites that are necessary to the efficient functioning of the business. And because employees are often reluctant to complain to management about blocked sites, the workflow of the business ...
... can actually be negatively impacted by blocking websites.
The real problem with this kind of technique is that it doesn’t resolve the issue of employees being nonproductive during the workday. Even if certain websites are blocked from their business computers, many employees nowadays will still have access to the Internet through their smart phones. Managers may be able to control an employee’s desktop computer at the office to a certain extent, but they can’t control the employee’s smart phone. The truth of the matter is that if employees want to be distracted during working hours, they will find a distraction, whether it’s through the Internet or other means.
If employees are being nonproductive, there must be a reason—and maybe many reasons—for it. If only it were as simple as blocking in appropriate websites! The vast majority of the time, employees are being nonproductive for other reasons. It may be that their time isn’t being managed properly or that their work tasks aren’t challenging enough.
The other problem with Internet blocking sites is that it approaches the problem from a negative standpoint. Rather than addressing the negative behavior with a negative reaction, why not approach the problem in a positive manner? The key to making employees more productive is simple: engage their time. In other words, measure the amount of time that employees ARE being productive during the workday and set goals for them to achieve more productivity. In this way, a manager can use positive reinforcement to help employees reach their full potential.
