Perhaps it is not yet the most desirable for the fashion freaks, but it is getting widely popular among the people who look for something new, fashionable, beautiful and with a healthy conscience.

Tagua jewelry is made by the beads and nuts extracted from Tagua plant. Those extracted Tagua beads from Tagua plant come in different colors and sizes. The Tagua nut and so most of the tagua jewelry comes from the northwestern parts of South America, mostly from the costal areas of Ecuador, which is the home for the Tagua palms in its various species.

In the costal area of Ecuador, ost notably the province of Manabí, the tagua handicrafts sustain a good part of the local economy.

From the fields where each year a tagua palm gives up till 500 kgs ...
... of tagua nuts, where they are collected and sold to the villages and cities where the tagua industry is. There the nuts are dried for several months, peeled and then selected and sold to the processers: artesanos or small workshops till some larger factories..

The Tagua nuts are small in size, from a few centimeters to eight centmeter as a maximum size.

The nuts are cut in shape (beads as pearls, lens beads, olive beads, cube, cilinders, slices thin or thick) and dyed with natural colors or textile dyesin varied patterns and designs. The processing of the Tagua beads practically no chemicals and especially the more handicrafts processing a minimum of machinery.

All the Tagua beads are hand painted to the perfection by the professional Tagua artists. Apart from Tagua, there are many other natural herbs used to make handmade jewelries such as Gadua and forest seeds as Huaeruro, Pambil, Azaï, Ojo de Buey and Visola. All these seeds are collected in the wild form the rain forests of Ecuador and other parts of South America.
They represent the culture of the region of that area. Earlier they were not just used for jewelry making but for cosmetic and medical purposes by the local tribes. The vegetable ivory is another form of popular handmade jewelry made by these artists.
