It might seem as if everyone heads abroad on a plane to go on holiday, but in fact this is not the case. Many people book holidays in the UK and drive from home to get there. It is also perfectly possible to drive onto the Continent to enjoy a break in France or another country nearby.

But a holiday destination you drive to get to requires very different planning compared to a holiday destination you fly to. There are pros and cons to this method of travelling, but if you plan ahead there is no reason why the journey cannot be an enjoyable one.

Firstly it makes sense to have maps at the ready for the journey. Don’t rely solely on your sat-nav if you have one; you never know if it might go wrong or fail to give you the right directions. It is always handy to have a map – indeed some people prefer to navigate in this way anyway. If you have a partner travelling in the passenger seat they can tell you where your next turn will be.

Next, consider how far you are travelling and when you will need to leave home. Clearly, travelling 100 miles is very different from going four times as ...
... far. You might benefit from booking into one of the many Yorkshire hotels if you are going through this part of the country, to give you an overnight break. Hotels on M1 are also worth thinking about if you want to break up the journey a bit. Simply look and see where the nearest Yorkshire hotels are en route to your destination around this area, or look for hotels on M1 or another motorway if you are going elsewhere. This can help plan your journey. Just be sure you book in advance; you don’t want to arrive only to find they don’t have any available rooms for you to stay in.

Make sure you have some refreshing drinks and snacks on board too. Ideally pack a cool bag and place it behind the driver’s seat. This means the passenger can get to it easily if need be. You shouldn’t drink or eat anything while driving, but if you keep the bag in the car you can pull off the road into a lay-by and not have to get out and find your supplies. You cannot guarantee it won’t be pouring with rain when you want to stop!

As you can see a bit of prior planning is perfect to ensure you reach your holiday destination easily and in a pleasant manner. It makes the start of your holiday far less stressful too.
