When your car leaves you stranded in the middle of the road, your only hope is to call for road assistance to get to where you want. If you don't pay attention to the symptoms of car trouble, you may end up spending a great deal of money for an otherwise simple problem. Ignition systems should be in pristine condition to start your car. Ignition coils send specific voltage to the spark plugs of your engine and this voltage gets converted into spark to ignite fuel. If there is a problem with the coils, your car may not start despite your efforts.

Why Ignition Modules Fail?

The coils play an important part of ignition systems as they generate the voltage needed to create a spark. The coils are triggered by ignition modules also known as ignition amplifiers. The module for triggering the coil is usually rugged, but it can fail eventually. The ignition modules receive a pulse from either hall effect sensors or magnetic pickups. When the module receives a pulse it in turn amplifies the pulse and triggers the coil. There is lot of heat generated while amplifying the pulse and creating the spark. If there are problems ...
... or short circuits in the primary or secondary windings of an ignition coil, it can affect the efficiency of the ignition system. Ignition modules will often appear to work when an engine is cold but the transistor circuit within the module will begin to break down as it heats up. Ignition modules are triggered by hall effect sensors or magnetic pickup coils. These can also fail but are less likely to do so than ignition modules or ignition coils.

Identifying Symptoms of Faulty Ignition Coils

Misfiring of an engine is often a symptom of a faulty ignition system. The entire engine operation might be crippled as a result of misfires and result in a severe loss of power and reduced performance. Sometimes, problems in the ignition system may not be obvious right away but the problem will become gradually worse until a failure occurs.

Ignition problems may not always be related to the ignition coils. Modern vehicles often have a combined ignition coil pack which is controlled by the vehicle’s computer or ECU.

These systems rely on the signals from crank sensors to know when to fire the ignition coils. If there is a fault with the crank sensors, the ignition system can be affected

Modern day auto ignition systems are built for better reliability, efficiency and accuracy. There are not many moving parts and so, adjustments are not always an option. Diagnostics of a car ignition system will essentially check sensors like crank sensors, camshaft position sensors or others to ensure that they function properly. Ignition coils can sometimes be removed to check separately whether they are functioning correctly. When you have to replace faulty ignition system components, always buy quality parts online and never settle for cheap parts as these can soon let you down.
