Delhi is the capital of India. It is also its cultural and political center. It is called Dilli by the locals. The official name is National capital territory of Delhi and is the largest metropolis in terms of area and the second largest metropolis in terms of population. When talking about the world Delhi is the eighth largest metropolises in terms of population.
Location
It is situated on the banks of the River Yamuna and has been continuously inhabited. It still has remains of many ancient and medieval monuments and archaeological sites.
History of Delhi
During the 18th and 19th century when the British East India Company had control of major part of India, Calcutta was the capital under the company rule and also under the British Raj, till George V announced that the capital be moved back to Delhi in the year 1911. Architecture and culture
Because of the migration of various kinds of people from different countries, Delhi has become multicultural and a cosmopolitan metropolis. It is greatly influenced because of its lengthy history and its historic association with India being its capital. The old city houses the Jama Masjid which is India's largest mosque and Red Fort which were built by the Mughals and the Turkic rulers and they are really architectural marvels. Humayun's tomb is another one of the world heritage sites.
There are lots of monuments in Delhi like the Jantar Mantar which is the astronomical observatory, India Gate and the Purana Qila. Modern architecture can be seen in the Akshardham, Laxminarayan temple and the Bahai lotus temple. Raj Ghat and similar memorials are places where the memorials of Mahatma Gandhi and various other great personalities remain. It also has many government buildings and official residences of the British colonial architecture. Rashtrapati Bhavan, Rajpath, the secretariat the parliament of India and Vijay Chowk are other important structures.
Important festivals and events
National events like the Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti and Republic day are all celebrated with great honor and pride here. It is here that the Prime Minister of India addresses the whole of India from the Red fort. Festivals like Diwali the festival of lights, Guru Nanak's Birthday, Mahavir Jayanti, Holi, Lohri, Durga Puja, Maha Shivaratri, Eid, Krishna Janmastami, Moharram and Buddha Janati are some of the festivals.
The Qutub festival is where dancers and musicians from all over India gather and show case their talents and the Qutub Minar is the chosen backdrop of the event. There is a kite flying festival, Vasant Panchami the spring festival and the international mango festival held every year. The auto expo Asia's largest auto show and the world book fair the second largest exhibition of books in the world are conducted in Delhi.
