To make a medical drama hit primetime you need four aspects- grey walled hospitals and doctors with equal mood tones, forbidden relationships between rookie and resident and esoteric jokes (funny what?) that make us wonder if medicine is some branch of rocket science. Blend this all together to produce a nice spicy mix and you’ll have the show running for seven seasons and more. Yeah, but that was yesterday. Dramas concerning hospital scenarios and the lives of doctors dressed in drab are no longer hot on selling. Desperate Housewives star Dana Delany’s chilly comeback to television is yet another medical drama. And it’s not so much of an eyesore to see her perform roles not belonging to her forte. ‘Body of Proof’ is a so-so medical drama that fortunately, does not have doctors dealing with sickly patients. Dana Delany stars as ME (medical examiner) Dr. Megan Hunt who fiddles with dead bodies to figure out the cause of death. The plot goes in depth about the events occurring in her personal and professional life.
Being the protagonist of the show, Megan Hunt is interestingly characterized. She appears as a prissy, ...
... emancipated and all the while smart woman with a dry/slapstick sense of humor and with a slightly troubled past (as always). Overall, her character is complicated and Delany’s acting skills have done the character justice. Before the start of her career as an ME, Dr Hunt was a brilliant neurosurgeon who had her license taken away as she supposedly killed a patient on the operating table. As the story progresses, we see Dr Hunt willowing away at the guilt residing in her centre as her past is slowly revealed. Hunt being the daughter of some rich guy and honorable judge is portrayed as a demanding, closed-off and in denying feelings and emotions character (almost always). Occasionally, she likes to play blame with her mother and holds her responsible for papa dearest’s sudden suicide that happened when she was “naïve and young”. Apparently, mother and daughter don’t share a happy relationship.
According to the story, Megan lost her medical license after encountering a life-altering accident that conveniently caused her to kill a patient while in surgery. Apart from wallowing in self-guilt and repenting the loss of both her license and her father, Megan occupies herself with pondering over the struggling relationship she holds with her adolescent daughter. It’s funny to watch her actually put some effort into keeping her daughter happy and fail without fail in the end. Her workaholic nature got her a divorce from her professor husband who in recent episodes seems to have developed an interest with Hunt’s boss and Chief ME Dr. Kate Murphy. Their young daughter is anything but uncomfortable with this new development, but Megan suddenly reveals her immature side that could be pegged off as a result of concealed jealousy. This is ironic in its sense, as it was quite clear that Dr Megan Hunt was no longer concerned about her ex.
Well, Hunt certainly has a complicated life. But when she wears her gloves and grabs the scissors the medical genius in her gets unleashed and there’s no controlling her. What’s more, she loves to spite the life out of her colleagues especially an irate police detective who has some tough luck to be accompanied by Dr. Hunt to crime scenes. Hunt’s persuasive abilities are admirable as she insists on playing detective and bring justice to the deceased. She’s got some amazing deductive powers the reason being why the frustrated detective (poor thing) gave up on asking her to “just do her job and get it over with”. Each episode has a leading twist to the story that Dana finds out about 15 minutes before the show gets over. It was entertaining to guess the convict before Dr. Hunt could proclaim, but even that gets boring after a while. Either way, Body of Proof is enlightening in a weird sense and gives you a refreshing break from all those frustratingly recycled plotlines.
