The migration time can be said to be one of the spectacular events in the wildlife. You get to see millions of millions of animals migrating to new areas and discovering new habitats. Getting away from the harsh winter or sunny climate, lack of vegetation and preys; force a lot of animals to migrate.

But these migrations are becoming peril. As per a recent report by Wildlife Conservation Society, the long-distance migrations as a whole are just becoming less and maybe after some years disappear. Being one of nature’s most visible and widespread phenomena, there are many reasons why there is a decline.

Basically, many of us are aware that migration is one of the important aspects that wildlife needs to survive. People who are living in the eastern and other parts of northern America will know how much decline is there in the wildlife migration. No longer we can experience the flocks of millions of passenger- pigeons that temporary obscured the sun when they migrate to new breeding grounds. Also the residents of the Great Plains who climb to the top of the hills can no longer gaze down and see the hundreds and ...
... thousands of bison gazing. This was possible two centuries ago.

Now the question that comes to your mind is that what causes these declines? The causes of all these declines usually depend on various things like habitat destruction, obstacles and barriers created by dams and fences, overexploitation and climate changes. The grievous thing is that many of the species are in the danger of being extinct rather than becoming less and less common. Thus wildlife enthusiastic and birdwatchers will find it hard to see the migratory songbirds each spring and in the Western American's private and national ranches you will see less of bison. Before or years ago, you would have seen hundreds and thousands of them, but now the numbers are decreasing.

Naturally the question that comes in the mind of majority of people is that given the panoply of the various environmental problems that we face now, is the fading glory of migration really a significant issue? The answer is definitely yes. Protecting the abundance of migrants is the major key to protect the ecological importance of migration. As the number of migrants decreases or you can say declines so too many of the important ecological properties and services associated with them.

Now given the strong environmental and economical reasons for protecting animal migration, the question that will naturally arise is why have we been so unsuccessful at conserving them? Maybe the answer may lie in the fact that conserving migratory animals poses a definite number of challenges. The foremost challenge lies in coordinated planning across borders and boundaries that means a great deal to us but nothing to animals. It basically means that during migration, birds and animals cross boundaries and various countries. So the nations through which these animals migrate have to provide safe nesting, wintering, or refueling stops in order for them to complete the journey.

The next key challenge is associated with conserving migrations is the convincing agencies, institutions, and individuals to agree in protecting the animals while they are still in abundant. The United States’ government and governments of other countries have a long tradition of protecting endangered species. That is usually when the plant or the animal in question is teetering on the brink of extinction. But for the basic reasons cited above, this type of eleventh hour intervention is wholly unsuited to the task of saving migrations where the goal should be to protect the species while they are still in plentiful.

Now if we are successful in saving the world's great animal migrations, we would have protected the natural phenomena. We also will have to learn to take timely and cooperative actions to solve complex environmental problems. It is even possible that efforts to protect migratory animals will inform our efforts to address other environmental and social ills that similarly transcend artificial borders and boundaries. If you want to know more about these problems and wildlife, watch the various wildlife shows available in the packages of service providers like Cox Communications.

Being a freelance writer and active blogger, Mark likes to share his thoughts with the rest of the world and to sources out some great services provided by Cox Communications. The wildlife migration is one of the nature’s most awesome phenomena which is now declining. He feels that it is our responsibility to act fast and put a stop to this decline.
