A potential dental school student should be aware from the very beginning that problems and tribulations with his or her application, such as taking and passing DAT or preparing an outstanding application essay, or successfully passing through the admittance interview, will seem like nothing special when compared with stresses and rigors of the actual dental school training process. Yes, it is sad, but true - student’s life at a dental school is extremely stressful for the majority of aspiring future dentists. The first year can seem to be especially stressful, since during this period a student needs to become acclimated to the school environment, which is completely new and strange for a green-horn student. At the same time, the first year student will be faced with the necessity to manage the usually increased workload of the training process in order to progress. Any student, wishing at least to get through the four-year dental school training period and be graduated successfully, needs to employ some clever method, some tactics to deal with the dental school training stress. But in case you want to really excel at your ...
... dental school to get the most from your training for the time and money you have spent you should be prepared to double and triple your determination and self-discipline, trying to work out - through certain amount of experimentation - the best ways to absorb and master the teaching material required and, at the same time, avoid harmful stress and fatigue, which will be your greatest enemies on the way to becoming a dentistry superstar!

In order to achieve the above-mentioned objective a dental school student can make good use of the following points we have described below.

1. The Teaching Stuff Of Dental Schools Really Wants Student To Do Well

Do not fall the victim of a totally untrue notion that the teaching stuff and administration of the school are after you, making a student come through really tough times. It is not true. The majority of dental schools really do want their students to do well. Although some classes, especially such as Anatomy and Physiology, do treat the first year students in a not so kind manner, which is explained by pure necessity to prepare the students well for the career in dentistry and separate the able and hard-working individuals from those without enough devotion or academic ability to handle the imposed workload. This is just a necessary, natural process of weeding out those that would never fit into a dentistry specialization. So, the conclusion is as follows: work hard, demonstrate your interest and devotion and you will be a success. No dental school instructor eats first year students for breakfast!

2. If You Feel You Are Falling Back in Your Studies Ask For Help, Get a Tutor

The dental school workload and the number of various classes, project, lab work and so on are really too great and versatile to allow a person to excel in all of them at the same time, especially during the first year, which is known to be the most stressful and horrifying for freshers. If you do find that your problems with keeping up with the rests of the class are building up – then immediately ask for help, seek the assistance of a tutor. The professors of your class are usually quite willing to give a helping hand to a student with some kind of difficulties. Do not wait till your grades get out of control, act quick enough to stabilize the situation.

3. Evaluate Your Abilities and Career Goals Realistically, Do Not Try to Overachieve

Avoid the mistake of becoming an overachiever. Do some honest evaluation of your actual abilities and the career objectives you wish to achieve. If you feel that the latter are above the former than try to give an honest answer to the following question: “Do I really need to be the top person in my class?” In fact, if your purpose is to just graduate, you may assume a much more relaxed attitude to the whole training process, saving your precious time and mental energy. On the other hand, being among the top fifty percent of your class would be a great competitive advantage. Well, anyway, the decision is totally yours. Do some thinking about it and accept what would be the best for you in this respect.

4. Make Use Of Working Out Mutually-Beneficial, Well-Intentioned Relations With Your Fellow Students

If you study together with other guys in your class you will see that creating a study group can be a good enhancement to the quality and the speed of your teaching material absorption. You can do some kind of brain-storming, exchanging ideas and approaches to the material that was explained to you in class, explaining things to each other in case of difficulties with understanding. Setting up a joint studying process, in which the guys will mutually help each other to master the material in question, will surely make the training process at a dental school less stressful in all respects. If you meet at a library or a cafe with snacks the teaching process becomes more fun when combined with some food you like. Joining efforts and mental resources with other students creates a mutually beneficial, win-win environment, which will allow you to master the teaching material better and faster.

5. Remember That All Work And No Play Makes You a Dull Boy

While you should devote the lion’s share of your time and energy to the issues of mastering the teaching material and excelling at the dental school of your choice, the total concentration on constant, without breaks, studying would be a great mistake. Constant fatigue and pressure may lead to your nervous exhaustion that will drive you and everyone around you crazy. Hard studies should be combined with some kind of extracurricular activities – just go out for dinner to socialize with your friends, join some volunteer program, do something that will provide you with a short break from working on your assignment and stuff. Attend a club to have a bit of dancing or play some video game, like Xbox 360 of PS3- a lot of dental school students find this kind of after-classes activity very refreshing and stimulation. Also pay attention to getting enough physical exercises, go for a work-out at least three times a week and make sure you eat well, try to stick to wholesome food instead of fast-food junk. And you will see very soon, this program of extracurricular activities beneficially influences your grades, though you are spending less time on your studying than before. The quality time results in quality grades!
