The great Crested Newt also goes by the names Northern Crested Newt and warty newt. It is a part of the Salamandridae family and can be found in areas of Europe and Asia. The Great Crested newt has dark grey flack and a dark grey/brown back. They are covered with spots which are made up of orange and yellow tones and black splotches on their undersides. Each Great Crested newt has its own individually patterned underside.

The male Great Crested Newt is characterised by its jagged crest which appears during the breeding season of the newt. The females have an orange strip along the lower edge of their tail and in many cases a similar stripe on their back.

Great Crested Newts are a protected species in the UK and EU because they are very rare and are at risk of extinction. More and more often, their habitats are becoming threatened and this has led to a swift decline in their numbers.

As the Great Crested Newt is protected under the Annex IV of the EC Habitats and Species Directive and the Wildlife Countryside Act of 1981 as well as the Natural Habitats Regulations of 1994, ...
