Heysham Port is set to expand as the new road comes in. This will create new jobs in the local area. Peel Ports, owners of Heysham Port have recently met with Lancaster and Morecambe College to create a partnership which will mean local people are trained to access these jobs.

Heysham Port offers comprehensive facilities for a diverse range of general cargo and is home to one of Europe's major offshore supply bases, providing logistics support to one of the largest gas fields in UK waters. Peel Ports the UK's second largest ports group have recently invested in new ship-to-shore linkspan bridges for faster and smoother discharge and loading. The new linkspans have been the key element of a multi-million pound investment in the port which will look to bring it into a new league in terms of haulage and offshore support.

Lancaster & Morecambe College will be a key element in this new era for Heysham Port, supporting the development with the provision of new training and courses. These courses will look to train people form the local area in the right skills to access the new jobs being created by the development ...
... of the port.

David Wood, Principal and Chief Executive of Lancaster & Morecambe College said: ‘ This is a very exciting partnership which will allow us to do exactly what we are here for as the main provider of Further Education in this area– train local people to access local jobs and help our local economy and our community prosper'

Lancaster & Morecambe College has recently seen a revival in engineering courses with more and more students choosing to study a vocational qualification in engineering, exactly the sort of qualification which will allow them to work for an organisation such as Peel Ports. Lancaster & Morecambe College also trains a number of Engineering Apprentices some of which already work for Heysham Port.

Heysham Port commented: ‘We have had a great experience working with Lancaster and Morecambe College on the Apprenticeship scheme. Apprentices are very good employees and the skills they learn in College are very valuable to our workplace. We are looking forward to consolidating this partnership by developing more courses with Lancaster & Morecambe College to train people for the new roles we will be needing and support prosperity in the local area.'

Lancaster & Morecambe College has been providing further education and training on the Morecambe Road site for over 50 years, meeting the needs of our local residential and business communities.
