Your Mobility Scooter's Battery
There are many people who use mobility scooters and electric power wheelchairs to increase, or as their chief source of, mobility. Mobility scooters and electric power wheelchairs are similar in the service that they provide. They also have many other similarities, including the use of batteries.
In times passed gasoline was the most common form of fuel for most personal movement devices. The use of gasoline, however, is not practical for indoor use and has several other issues that can be unsafe. Due to advances in technology, batteries now have a longer per charge life and take less time to charge.
Keeping your batteries in good working order is imperative to ensuring your mobility movement device will always provide reliable service. It is important to periodically check battery connections on your mobility scooter or power chair. Check to make sure that they are tight and are not corroded. Corrosion is a whitish colored sand like substance that appears to ‘grow' on batteries. Both loose connections and corrosion can result in poor performance and should be fixed immediately. You can clean corrosion with ...
... a combination of baking soda and water. Make a thick paste by combining the two and apply it to the corroded area. Apply the paste and let it stand for at least five minutes before scrubbing it with a toothbrush. As a preventative measure you can apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the outside of the connections. Corrosion is formed when the metal contacts air and the petroleum jelly will help block the air.
You will generally need to change your batteries at some point throughout the life of your personal mobility device. This generally is not very expensive and by properly maintaining your battery you will help increase its life.
