According to Bill Gates, “The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow.” So how did it all happen? Let’s explore in depth about the history of internet and how it evolved. The internet was born when computers were developed in 1950s. Initially it started with point to point communications between the mainframe computers and terminals. Are you wondering what a point to point connection is? In the telecom industry, it refers to the connection with reference to communication between two different endpoints. This is in marked contrast with a point to multi point connection. Here there are many different nodes that receive information from one single node.

Gradually point to point connections between computers happened. Then the time came for packet switching. It is nothing but a digital communication system where the transmitted data are grouped into blocks called packets. Here a sequence of packets is delivered to various networks. A lot of packet switched networks such as ARPANET, Mark I at NPL in the UK, CYCLADES, Merit Network, Tymnet, and Telenet were developed using protocols. Are ...
... you wondering what a protocol is? Just like how an algorithm is related to mathematics, a protocol is related in a similar way to communication. It can be implemented as software or hardware or both.

It is said that the ARPANET particularly designed protocols for internetworking. It is a system where a lot of networks can be connected with each other thereby forming a network of networks. In the year 1982, internet was introduced to the world by standardizing the Internet Protocol Suite. Then the concept of world- wide network came into picture. The computer science network was developed by the national science foundation and it provided access to the supercomputer sites in the United States. Super computers are used for performing high level calculations and more intense tasks. They are used in quantum physics, weather forecasting, climate research, Oil and gas exploration, molecular modeling and physical simulations.

In the later part of 1980s commercial internet service providers started coming into the picture. The internet was commercialized in the year 1995. At the same time the national science foundation network was decommissioned and this led to the elimination of the last traces of restriction of the internet to be commercialized. It has drastically affected the lives of the people by introducing electronic mail, instant messaging, voice over Internet Protocol, two way interactive video calls, World Wide Web and more of such options.

What was initially started as a simple network later emerged as a huge network giant in the field of technology. Using methods such as voice over Internet Protocol, we can talk to people and send voice messages without the using publicly switched telephone network. Using online shopping which is a form of electronic shopping, where we need not travel to shops or stand in queues to buy a product. It is all available to you in the click of a button. Initially the internet carried only 1% of the telecommunicated information but the percentage is now 97%. That summarizes the history and evolution of the Internet.

Like Internet for chatting and emailing, home alarm system with advanced technology can protect our house. So many types of alarm systems are available in the market. Among them, home security alarm from companies like ADT Alarm System and fire alarm system are frequently used ones. Home alarm systems are more useful when we go out for a vacation leaving our valuable items inside the house. Most of the home alarm systems will give 24 hours service. Some of the advanced home security system even connects the home with the nearest police station.

Ann is a freelancer. She likes to write about the latest advancements in technology such as the Internet. She is interested in writing about advanced electronic equipments. During vacations she visit different attractive tourist spots and at that time ADT Alarm System protects her house.
