Writing resume does not ask you to follow strict rules. Neither does it have to be one page following a specific format. It should be exact to your requirement as each resume is a marketing communication that tells about you. Here, we are cutting the chase and present the most basic resume writing tips to make an effective resume.

• Use proper headings matching your type of jobs- Employers only take a glance of the resumes and so give proper heading and titles relating to the jobs you want. Give strong headings for an Account Manager position as ‘Management of Receivable and Payable Accounts’, ‘Accounts Department Administration’ instead of Accounting/Administrative.

• Use designs attracting attention- Glancing resumes indicate that they make immediate assumptions. This is because they do not have time to go through each job description. So your resume writing design should highlight important information regarding your education, skills and experience at first glance.

... having proper fit contents is essential to generate your expected salary. For instance, instead of writing maintaining records of accounts write ‘working with chief financial officer and manage over 1000 accounts’.

• Use proper power words – Using power words matching your position strengthens the image. Instead of writing giving assignments to staff, write Directed workflow, trained staff and supervised payable and receivable accounts. This shows a command over the field.
• Analyze key words in job descriptions- Understand the job description and create powerful resumes. Look for ads like Billing and Collections head, Management of A/R Accounts, and then apply to the same.
• Sell your skills tactfully- Sell your skills like a secretary can state typing speed and accuracy at the bottom line. Anything that you need should be put in a tactful way such as ‘seeking an accounting position with my experience of managing accounts department doing $200,000 monthly claims’.
• Use bullet points- No employer have the time to read long paragraphs of text. Make sure, therefore, to use bullet points and short sentences to describe your experiences, educational background and professional objectives.
• Cover letter- Cover letters play a pivotal role in getting the required job. Instead of customer service, cash accountable, use Retail Management, Retail Accounting or Retail Accounting Station Supervision.
