A data shredder is software that deletes unwanted files from your computer so that it can never be retrieved. This is not only done to clear your computer of too much junk but also to minimize potential threats of information or identity theft. Data shredder software shreds files to such an extent that it can never be pieced together. So even if a hacker tries to piece together your information with the most sophisticated and advanced software in hand, he will not be able to do it.

When your system shreds a file what it basically does ids to overwrite the corresponding disk area of those files with random data. This overwriting can be done up to three times to remove every trace of that file. Thus the chances of that file being ever recovered are greatly minimized. Some of these softwares even delete the metadata of those files. Metadata is the details like name, date of creation etc. of those files. In the case of highly sensitive data, it is beneficial to remove their metadata as well to eliminate any risk of recovery.

Data shredder's are easy to use softwares and have features like graphic user interface so ...
... that these can be made accessible to all types of users. Users have to simply select the files that need to be shredded, choose the correct process and execute the program. Advanced file data shredding programs make use of algorithms with varying degrees of security. Shredding of files is a process that requires time as it works by overwriting the files on the disk. Advanced shredding programs take longer time than the simpler ones.

One may ask what the use of a data shredder is. With the usage of computers becoming more and more extensive, it has become our one place storage device. We all are greatly dependent on our PC's. It reduces a lot of manual labor. We even save confidential and sensitive information on our PC's thereby increasing the risk of theft critical information. Deleting a file does not remove it from the computer. It just stays dormant on the disk. A thief can easily recover such data and misuse it. Therefore it is advisable to use data shredder to get rid of files that you do not want others to see. It is a great way of ensuring your safety.
