A point of sale system is intrinsic to almost all kinds of businesses, especially small and medium enterprises large ones, where movement of assets have to be monitored on a regular basis. To keep track of such movement, the POS system relies heavily on barcode scanners and thermal printers.

Barcodes are used to track your assets and manage them better, and a basic computer cannot be used to read these codes. This is why, barcode scanners come into picture. Barcode scanning is an important part of the point of sale system in any business, be it retail, hospitality or any other. It involves the use of a device to capture, read and record data that is found on a barcode label.

These labels can be printed using a thermal printer, through which barcodes can be printed easily and quickly. Thermal printers are also used for printing receipts of payments made at the POS.

Let us discuss in detail on what makes barcode scanners and thermal printers two of the most essential elements of the POS-

Barcode Scanners

Barcode scanners can broadly be categorised as contact readers and non-contact readers. ...
... While contact readers are normally hand-held devices that must touch the barcode to read it, non-contact readers do not need to come closer to the barcode, and come in hand-held and fixed mount models.

There are numerous reasons why every business that deals in tangible goods must invest in barcode scanners-

 Speed- This is one benefit of barcode scanners that cannot be ignored. Using a barcode scanner can improve your work speed and the way your business is operated. It takes a second to read the code and verify it.

 Error-free and accurate results- Barcode scanning is a new-age technology that enhances work efficiency, eliminates errors, and gives accurate results.

 Easy to use- You do not need to train your employees about using a barcode scanning kit. It is very easy to use and implement even by those who have lesser knowledge about technology.

 Saves time- A barcode scanner, purchased from a reliable brand, minimises the setup and training time, thus giving you and your employees ample time for other important tasks.

In the absence of a barcode scanner, managing your inventories can become a mammoth task and errors and delays become a common thing while doing so. Thus, using barcodes and barcode scanners is the ideal thing to do.

Thermal Printers

Thermal printers are just as important element of POS as barcode scanners. They do not use ink or toner; rather they use heat to transfer the image to the paper. These printers are used to print receipts and labels, besides several other things. Earlier, dot matrix printers were used to print receipts, but the noise and low speed from these printers made them least preferred way of printing receipts, and were replaced with thermal printers.

Some of the many advantages of a thermal printer are presented below:

 Faster prints- The impact dot matrix printers delivered slow prints, making the entire process slow and wasting a lot of time of the operator. However, in thermal printers, the prints come out fast, without compromising on the quality.

 Saves money on consumables- Because you do not have to use ink or toner, you can save a lot of money on that. The only consumable that you have to spend on is thermal paper. Other than that no other consumable is required.

 Compact and portable- The size of thermal printer is much more compact than the dot matrix printers, making them handy and convenient to use anywhere in the office.
