One can say that choosing vegetables is an art. There are many who go to a store, pick up whatever’s there on display and finish off vegetable shopping. There are a few others who buy packed vegetable i.e., vegetables that are cut and packed into tiny boxes. Though these finish the shopping easier, the vegetables bought through these methods are not always fresh. There are times when the vegetables may look fresh but they might be stale or spoilt inside. At times, the vegetable might look fresh when they are bought, but the next day they might look stale. To avoid all this, it is better to look into what is being bought rather than regretting it later.
Lettuces are the most common vegetable that is not bought rightly. If the color is not a perfect green, if it is yellowish or another color, it means the lettuce is in a poor condition. It may not taste good even after removing the skin, so it is always better to go for lettuces that are green in color. Celery is another product that is not bought rightly. When buying celery, look into the color of the small leaves rather than the larger ones. If these leaves are yellowish ...
... or appear stale, then it means that particular bunch of celery is not fresh. Next thing to check in celery are the stems, if they are not firm and crisp, then that celery is not a good buy.
Next are the cabbages. Many might think it is hard to go wrong with cabbages. But, the cabbage might look fresh but the leaves may not be fresh. The head of the cabbage should be firm and it should weigh heavy depending upon its size. The outer leaves of the cabbage must look fresh with a good color. Similarly, eggplants should also be chosen carefully. The eggplants that are immature are the best bet. The bigger mature ones might have seeds that are bitter to taste.
The eggplant’s skin must be smooth and it should be heavy for its size and it should not feel soft and be brown in color. To know this, slightly press the vegetable with the forefinger or thumb, if it gives in slightly and comes back to normal then it is in the right shape to buy. If the indent remains, then it means the flesh inside is soft and the vegetable is over ripe. There are chances for the egg plants to be hollow, knock it gently on the knuckles, if it produces a hollow sound then it means the vegetable is hollow inside and cannot be bought.
Tomatoes should also be bought carefully. The tomatoes outer skin should be shiny and light red in color. The feel of the tomato should be firm and not too squishy. If it is squishy, then it means the vegetable is overripe and kept for a longer period of time. The better tomatoes can also be decided by taking in the smell of the stem end. If it retains the smell of fresh garden, then the tomato will have a good taste otherwise the tomato will not have a great taste.
These are some of the common vegetables which need to be chosen with great care. Similar to these vegetables, all the vegetables’ freshness can be determined through various ways.
