Flowers are the best way to express your feelings without words. Be it an apology, a token of gratitude, an expression of love, condolence or admiration, there’s nothing a flower can’t represent. Say it with flowers, say it with love.
Since ancient times the flower language was used to convey opinions and feelings. In the Victorian era, flower language was used to such a great extent that now there is a meaning behind every flower. During recent times it is custom to present flowers during special occasions. Now, the meaning behind flowers or the secret messages they once used to convey are no longer taken into consideration, but the sentiment still remains. For example, couples convey their love on Valentine’s Day and occasions alike by exchanging red roses. In the past presenting a red rose, meant undeniable passion and love for the other.
Not only roses, even a simple sweet-pea holds a deep meaning. Gifting a sweet-pea to your lover after a date would mean that you enjoyed the date and appreciated their time. Expressing yourself through flowers is not to be taken lightly. You need to take into consideration ...
... the occasion and the flower before gifting it to a person. The flower language may be outdated, but not many people have forgotten the meanings that different flowers hold. Besides, it’s good to know the language of flowers, it makes choosing the appropriate flowers for a give occasion much easier doesn’t it? Here are the different flowers you can use to express different emotions and feelings.
Love: Expression of love through flowers is universal. A single red rose could mean a proposal of love. Apart from the red rose there are many other flowers that can be used to express love. The red carnation denotes admiration, and a feeling of deep want. Gifting a red chrysanthemum means that you love the person platonically or physically. A white rose also denotes platonic love or innocence and purity.
To bless someone: You’ve got to be careful while picking flowers to wish your loved ones wellness or happiness. For example, you can’t gift a red rose to the bride or groom at the wedding. Violets mean fidelity, so avoid that too. The ideal flower for wishing someone happiness would be the pink rose. It indicates grace and happiness. White Heather is for good luck. A stephanotis and a bridal rose indicate wishes for a happy married life. Bells of Ireland or a Buttercup can be gifted to wish someone good luck or prosperity.
Friendship: There are many flowers that are used to express love. But to express friendship, there are so very few. A honeysuckle means devoted affection or everlasting bonds. Although in some cultures it is used to denote physical admiration, a honeysuckle can be used to represent lifelong friendships. The yellow rose is the universal code for friendship. It denotes loyalty, devotion and admiration. An azalea or a peach blossom can be given to a female friend wishing her the best. Iris, Lilacs, heliotropes and daisies are signs of loyalty, everlasting friendship and true grace.
Besides these there are flowers that can be used to apologize or express gratitude. The purple Hyacinth or a white poppy are beacons for sincere apology. Snowdrop denotes consolation. The dark pink rose is a token of gratitude.
Not all flowers mean good. There are flowers that are used to convey ill will too. For example Cypress denotes mourning or death, Ivy denotes jealousy or fidelity. Gifting flowers has been a tradition for a long, long time. And it still is in fashion. You don’t have to visit the florist to buy and gift someone a flower.
