There are many non poisonous products that can be used for cleaning and as personal care products to minimize the environmental pollutants that we wash down our drains and into the natural water bodies. The poisonous products that we drain into the water systems results in situations like distraction of ecological pyramids, loss of marine and aquatic creatures. It’s time to hold that thought on using aromatic cleansers and switch to non-toxic products. One such product that can be used for cleaning purposes is baking soda, commonly found in every household’s kitchen shelf. A recent show on television connected by Dish TV Packages enlightened me on the various usage of baking soda. After several trail and errors experiments in my kitchen, I came to acknowledge the uses of baking soda to be really effective as is as good as conventional cleansers. Read on below to understand what baking soda is and its applications.

An important point here to understand before we move on to know the applications of baking soda is the difference between baking soda or bicarbonate of soda and baking powder. Baking soda also known as bicarbonate ...
... of soda, and baking powder are both leavening agents used in baking or cooking. Batter which needs to expand or rise requires this type of leavening agents for the end results to be soft and fluffy. Baking soda is a pure leavening agent which needs acidic ingredients to show its effects. For the chemical reaction to take place to make food rise, baking soda is usually mixed with acidic ingredients like lemon juice, chocolate, buttermilk or honey in recipes. Baking powder on the other hand comes pre-mixed with the acidic ingredient, known as cream of tartar. You can make your own baking powder at home by mixing two parts cream of tartar with one part bicarbonate of soda. It does not require acidic agent for the reaction to take place and is commonly used with neutral-tasting ingredients, such as milk.

Baking soda is inexpensive, environmental friendly, fragrance-free, and safe for nearly all surfaces, making it ideal for household use. It can be used for first aid applications. It can reduce sunburn and poison ivy itches when dissolved into the lukewarm bath. A paste made out of baking soda by mixing cold water can ease the pain caused by bee stings. A pinch of soda and salt into a glass of lukewarm water can release the acidity burp and work as antacids. A small bowl of baking soda in the refrigerator or freezer will keep away unpleasant odors. Sprinkle baking soda on oven and microwave floors and clean it with a wet sponge for sparking surface. You can do the same thing to clean kitchen surfaces. To remove stale smells from food containers rinse with baking soda mixed water. You can even use baking soda to clean your silverware, Rub a mixture of baking soda and water on to each item and rinse with water. Soak the hardcore greased cooking posts with a sprinkle of baking soda and water over night to get a clean shiny surface.

Baking soda has also uses in cooking apart from mixing with batter. Adding a pinch of baking soda to tomato sauce will reduce the acidity. It can even be added to soak to the beans. This will help to cook the beans faster making it softer easily and reduces flatulence in the eater as beans have propensity to cause flatulence. Baking soda can be used as meat tenderizer. When rubbed on to the raw meat or including a pinch of it while cooking meat makes it tenderer. On the whole Baking soda has many effective uses in household activities.
