The history of breast implants stretches back over a century. A variety of materials were used to augment or enhance breasts. As a cosmetic procedure, breasts were injected with paraffin in order to make them fuller or to restore breast volume as per the individual's choice.

In 1895, Austrian-German surgeon Vincenz Czerny performed the first breast implantation surgery. He used the patient's autologous adipose tissue to repair the asymmetry of the breasts. Although infections were very common during the early days of such cosmetic surgeries, the probability of any infection occurring has been reduced to a bare minimum over the years.

During the first half of the 20th century, physicians used substances such as ivory, glass balls, ground rubber, polyethylene chips, polyether foam sponge, Polyester strips wound into a ball, Silastic rubber, and teflon-silicone prostheses for implants. In the quest for successful Breast Enhancement, however, these materials did not produce the desired outcome.

In the 1920's, fat transplants were attempted ...
... by surgically removing fatty tissue from other parts of the body such as the belly area or buttock region and simply transferring them to the breasts. This did not work as was originally thought, and the procedure was abandoned by the 40's. In the 50's and the 60's, silicone and polyvinyl sponges were directly injected into the breasts. As a result, complications such as chronic inflammation, infections, and lumps were seen.

The modern history of Breast Implants begins in the year 1962. For the first time, an envelope filled with silicone gel was used for breast enhancement, which changed the history of breast implants forever. The envelope design provided a somewhat natural shape and feel. Whether the need was prosthetic or cosmetic, these silicone breast enhancers have proven to be accepted by women. In the 90's, soybean oil implants were introduced but these fell out of favor due to the severe toxicity that infected the body.

In the 2000s, the Brava breast enhancement and shaping system was introduced by a US company. It involves placing a bra-like device surrounded with silicone that creates a vacuum over the breasts and induces them to get bigger. But it had to be worn for 10 hours a day for several months to have an enhanced effect, which women were generally unhappy about.

In the year 2006, the US FDA approved silicone breast implants, which do not cause any disease. Technically known as cohesive gel implants, the new devices encase an inner substance that looks like a ‘gummy bear’. Designed to sustain their shape and integrity in case of a rupture or seepage, these quickly became the new standard for effective breast enlargement, except for the fact that they are more expensive than saline implants.

The plastic surgery associated with these breast implants can be carried out under local anesthesia, although most women are given general anesthesia. Surgeons also employ smaller instruments to perform the breast enhancement providing superior precision. Technological improvements currently employed for breast enhancement surgeries have become the norm, making them less painful than before. The advances in surgical techniques have evolved to such an extent that complications hardly ever occur, with upto 10 million women worldwide undergoing breast enhancement surgery and leading a normal life.
