At the rear of the ship, you will find elevated roof above the cabin which is basically higher as compared to the rest of the parts of each ship, is called as Poop Deck. It is generally a roof of a particular cabin that is constructed at the rear of the ship. This name has been originated from the French word called ‘Stern’ la poupe and is called as puppies in Latin.

Technically, very rare people know what is poop deck, other than people who work in ships in various departments. Therefore, it is technically a stern deck that gives clear visibility around and is an ideal site for navigation and observation. This is very commonly found in the traditional bigger to smaller sailing ships. However, in modern ships, you will find raised bridge area that is commonly used for navigation purposes. There was not specific use of poop deck other than better navigation and is followed the same over years in a more modern way.

The cabin right below the poop deck is called as poop cabin that was used by the officers as a mess. Other than this, the poop cabin was also effectively used ...
... to store a variety of items including maps and office logs. The poop deck was very familiar and since then became an important place to hang around for the officers. If the captain was not found on other areas or on helm, he would always be found on the poop deck. Captain often visits this spot to instruct the crew members regarding effective sailing. Just like a poop deck, a poop machine is also used in ships.

Even though, the Poop deck and poop cabin became very popular, it was the technology that drove attention of people towards other things rather than the poop deck. The sails began giving directions to the ship’s engine that ultimately dropped the effective usage of such poop decks. The popularity dropped due to the building of raised bridges on ships that is useful for multiple reasons. Other than navigation and observation, this bridge comes in variety of purposes that increase the demand and uses than the traditional usage of poop deck.

On modern ships, motorized warships are available where the ship functions differently. The things once carried from the poop deck are moved to the bridge which is basically located over the superstructure right at the center of the ship. Poop deck gives fascinating views to people as well as crew who enjoy observing the far sights directly from naked eyes or through binoculars to predict the obstruction ahead on the way.
