How do colors affect our system? Colors are nothing but the perception of electromagnetic radiations of different objects by our brain by the use of our eyes. These electromagnetic radiations are converted into electric impulses that hit the hypothalamus-the organ that controls our hormones. The hormone flow in our body when altered causes mood swings.
This is mainly why, when we watch movies on Movie Channels, black and white or gray scale colors are used to project a sad story, while vibrant hues of pink yellow etc. are used to project a cheery, lively atmosphere. Even in advertising, color psychology plays an important role. The combinations of colors should be chosen according to the subject of the advertisement and most importantly, the colors should all come together in an attractive, eye catchy way.
However, colors are not only for aesthetic purposes. They play a significant role in deciding a person's character and his personality. Psychologically, there are four primary colors: red, blue, green, yellow. These are the colors that signify different things to many people. Maybe it's because these four colors ...
... are those colors that are present in abundance all around us. In fact, these can be called as primitive colors. Let's see what these different colors mean and how they affect us:
Red: Blood is red. Since ancient times, the color red has been used to depict war and bloodshed. But before the start of civilization, man used the color red as a beacon, to signal what he can without words. Red also depicts anger. In some religions and beliefs, red represents holiness. But these are what many different cultures and civilizations symbolize the color red as. In psychology, the color red is said to stimulate blood pressure. It's an intense color, evoking strong emotions. It could be friendly or aggressive, but it is extremely so. Technically, red having the longest wavelength catches our eye faster than any other color. This is why flash card, traffic lights use the color red in them. Red denotes masculinity, strength and excitement. While on the other hand it could cause soreness to the eyes and denotes aggressive behavior.
Blue: The color blue is liked by an overwhelming number of people. It is the color of the sky and the water and almost everyone loves blue. Why do we find cloudless blue skies or the ocean comforting? Well, it's all got to do with the mind. The color blue is said to be easily trustable and reliable. It is effortlessly acceptable and offers a calm and soothing sensation. Blue indicates intelligence, a calm collected outlook and it is the most appealing color that is equally appealing to both men and woman. Religiously, blue is considered a holy color in almost every religion. Blue is said to sedate and calm and at the same time aid intuition. Sometimes, darker shades of blue can come off as cold and distant, which is not always a good thing.
Green: Green is the most abundant color in the color spectrum. Green is everywhere and comes second only to blue as the most preferred color. Green is the most pleasant color of all. The eye doesn't need to adjust to the color green. Therefore green indicates rest. It creates a balanced, soothing atmosphere. Green gives us a sense of security as it denotes sufficient rain and the absence of famine. In many cultures and religions, green symbolizes rejuvenation or resurrection. Green has the ability to alleviate depression and calm your nerves. However, green can also unnerve sometimes as do the sickly green colors and creates an effect of stagnation, boredom or blandness.
