Camel Is A Signigicant Animal That Can Survive Even In Desert Conditions
Camels have been friends to man for more than three thousand years. During the ancient times there were no transport systems. Man used to depend
on animals for their transportation. However, camels were very efficient means of transportation for men in the deserts. Even the horses which
were man’s first choice could not travel in the deserts. This is because the camels had a very huge body and they could travel long distances
without any water. Their feet help them to travel faster on the sands. In places like Egypt people still use camels for small tasks. It is very
hard for even man to walk distances in the deserts. Due to this factor the camel is called as the ship of the desert. Not only this, camels can
carry an extra of two hundred pounds and walk a distance of twenty miles a day in harsh desert climates. They are as fast as the horses while
running and an added advantage is that it can do it with any food and water. A camel is not only used for transporting but also many other uses.
Just like the sheep is used for extracting wool, we can extract the same from camels as ...
... well. We can extract other items like milk, meat,
leather and even its dung is used as a fuel.
The dromedary camel which otherwise called as the Camelus Dromedaries which is a typical Arabian camel exists only as a domesticated animal.
Today, about ninety percent of the camels are dromedaries. There are only two kinds of camels available; the first is the Camelus Ferus and the
other one is domesticated and is known as the Camelsus Ferus.t. Bacterianus. However, among the Bacterianus the wild ones look much different.
They look trimmer with smaller humps and have less hair.
One of the major differences between the Dromedary and Bactrian camels is on its humps. Hence it is very easy to identify these two species very
easily. The Dromedary camel has only one hump and has a ‘D’ shape on its back. While the Bactrian camel has two hence has a ‘B’ shape on its
back. Hence the camel is able to store fat instead of water. These fats stored in the humps transform into energy when they travel. With the
help of these humps the camels can store energy for a long time and this greatly depends on the climatic conditions and the amount of activity
it undertakes. The size of the hump is not always the same and it depends on the food it consumes. Hence when the food is less, the camel
becomes very lean and its body also drops down a little bit.
However, the camel does not require food and water daily and it can go on fasting for months together. While it has the capacity to fast for
such long, it also has the capacity of consuming thirty two gallons of water at one time. With the help of all these typical features the camel
has special adaptations to survive in the deserts. It has a very special eye and can protect itself from sand storms and it can see through
these harsh storms. It also has a double row of extra eyelashes and this facility helps it to keep the sand out of its eyes. Also, it can close
its nostrils too. Since it has broad and large feet, it can walk easily without getting pulled inside the sand. I watch a program about camels
on featuring on my television powered by Dish TV Packages in National Geographic Channels. I have seen some directly as well and camel is very
majestic to look at.
