Have you ever looked at your profit margin at the end of the month and wondered why the figures do not add up? If you invest well in a restaurant- diversify services, market products and bring more customers, you expect the fruits to appear in your accounting books. If your restaurant underperforms routinely, you could do better with a Restaurant POS system.

For every business, there is always money leaks and loopholes an automated system can help seal permanently. For instance, without a POS, you probably forget to charge some little items. This is so especially when the same customer orders more than once. Your staff will more likely forget to charge that extra cup of tea, sachet of tomatoes source etc. May be the fee involved for an item amounts to a negligible few cents, but cumulatively, the deficit is huge enough to drive business to loss. At the same time, undercharging or inconsistent charging may reduce your profit margins significantly. However, a number of strategically positioned POS workstations can help your restaurant receive payment for everything sold.

At the same time, the cost of running your ...
... restaurant may impede profitability a great deal. The cost of food and labour at your restaurant are most culpable in this regard, especially if unchecked. However, such restaurant operational costs can be checked to reasonable levels and help widen your monthly profit margins. You can prevent unnecessary profit leaks by getting rid of manual tracking systems. Acquire a Restaurant POS that tracks stock movement and payroll details.

The Components of a Restaurant POS solution

Just like all other computer systems, your POS will need a variety of hardware and software components for full functionality. Specific hardware and software requirements will depend on how and where you intend to deploy your POS solution. A complete POS system for your restaurant includes the following hardware components, networking devices (such as cables, routers etc), a server and several workstations, receipt printers, cash drawers, barcode scanners and label printers.

A server will consist of a complete Central Processing Unit (CPU) with storage, data input and output devices. The server may function as the centralised database store that all other system components utilise for processing tasks. Thus, all data that enters the system through the various work stations is stored in the central database.

Receipt printers, barcode scanners and cash drawers are at the transaction end of your POS. Just as the name suggests, receipt printers produce documentation for any transaction that takes place at your restaurant. On the other hand, cash drawers store money in form of notes, coins or cheques. Just like printers, they connect to the POS through a PC. Barcode scanners read product details into your POS. Label printers are not exactly integral to your POS because label printing services can be outsourced. However, some restaurants may choose to do in-house label printing.

Your POS software will serve as the interface between human and hardware components of the system. Make sure its user interface is highly intuitive to cut-down on training costs. You may wish to incorporate an online payment gateway for credit/debit card payments in your POS system.
