Improve Your Posture When Using A Laptop On A Desk

If you’ve spent hours hunching over a laptop screen, you probably know that laptop use inevitably leads to poor posture. Computing on a standard, fixed desk tends to pull your gaze down causing hunching and inward shoulder compression. Starting from the top, poor posture from using a laptop on a desk causes neck pain, eye strain, shoulder pain, back pain and can contribute to long-term disabilities like arthritis and perpetual hunching. In addition to affecting bone structure; hunching, or unnatural forward curvature of the spine makes people look shorter, fatter, and generally unhealthy.
Outside of physical ailments, poor desk posture has also been shown to detrimentally affect productivity. Hunching at a desk decreases focus, exacerbates fatigue, and creates unnecessary frustration from the inability to efficiently complete tasks. While poor posture has long-term deleterious affects on the body; harmful short-term problems center on the mental psyche.
The good news is that there are a couple simple ways to improve your posture while using a laptop seated at a desk. First, start with the foundation: replace ...
... your fixed desk with an ergonomic desk . one that can at least adjust in height and possibly even angle. An adjustable desk benefits both your lower and upper body. By adjusting in height, they give your legs more freedom to move around and let your feet rest flat on the floor with a downward angle at your hip joint. For the upper body, an ergonomic desk helps raise screens and materials to eye-level improving your back posture and letting your hands and wrist operate at a healthier angle. Picking the ergonomic desk to suit your projected utility is most important. For example, if you intend to spend long periods of time typing on a computer look for an ergonomic desk that can accommodate a monitor at eye level and has a second platform for your keyboard and mouse. It’s also ideal for the desk to be able to hold documents at a higher level and have enough surface area to accommodate papers, documents, and other desk materials. Desks with enough height adjustability also allow you to stand up and work (rather than remain seated).
Second, an ergonomic laptop stand is a great way to improve your posture when working on a laptop. These are invaluable stands that elevate laptop screens to eye-level and also adjust in angle to eliminate hunching and screen glare. By raising laptops off the desk surface, many laptop stands dissipate heat. Keeping laptops cool has been shown to prolong the laptop’s life. With enough height adjustability, many ergonomic laptop stands allow you to sit properly at a desk or convert your desk to a completely ergonomic standing desk. Used with or without a separate keyboard, an ergonomic laptop stand is a great tool that will improve your posture while working on a laptop at a desk.
