Hyperhidrosis is a condition that results in excessive sweating. This can be a difficult condition to deal with and can have psychological symptoms as well as physical ones.

Diagnosis

Sweating is a vital natural process and will vary from person to person. Your body will start to sweat when the weather is very warm or you have been exercising. Sweating in these circumstances is vital because it helps to chill the body down and prevent overheating.

However excessive sweating, known as Hyperhidrosis, is a common condition and one that often has little to do with the temperature or any exercise. There are 2 types of Hyperhidrosis:

Generalised hyperhidrosis – this will affect the whole body and is frequently triggered by an underlying medical condition. This is why it is recommended that you to get a proper diagnosis.
Primary Hyperhidrosis or focal hyperhidrosis – this is localised heavy sweating, which tends to affect the underarms, hands or feet, is more amenable to treatment. The cause of the focal condition is not really known but experts do think it is a result of problems ...
... with the nervous system. This type of Hyperhidrosis responsds well to treatment

Treatments

Sweating is a vital natural function so you cannot simply block it from happening. This could quickly cause the body to overheat leading to serious consequences. Instead treatments will look to reduce excessive sweating and make it more manageable. Common treatments include:

Strong Antiperspirants – these work like regular antiperspirants to block sweat glands in specific areas such as the armpits. Aluminium Chloride is an effective antiperspirant for hyperhidrosis but it can cause skin irritation.
Iontophoresis – if you suffer from excessive sweating of the hands and feet then antiperspirants may not be effective. Iontophoresis is another treatment available which works to numb the sweat glands and prevent them from overacting. This treatment will need to be carried out at a local hospital or health centre and can be very time-consuming though.
Anti-Sweating Injections – shown to be highly effective at treating excessive sweating. The injection is administered in safe levels into affected areas, where it works to numb the sweat glands and prevent them from overworking. This has been shown to be very effective for a large number of patients suffering from Hyperhidrosis and is most commonly used in the underarm area

Hyperhidrosis can be a very embarrassing condition and can have a negative impact on your quality of life. Fortunately there are effective treatments such as neurotoxin injections available to help you combat and manage this condition.
