A Pulled Quad Treatment Strategy Must Match The Intensity Of The Injury
Pulled quad treatment protocols aren't only just for the sports minded among us. Quad is the short term for quadricep and refers to the cluster of four muscles at the front of the thigh. This type of muscle injury is often sustained by runners but can also be experienced by non-athletes in the course of typical every day activities. For seasoned athletes and for those who could best be described as weekend physical devotees, one of the biggest risks for quad damage is failure to warm up the muscles before starting the activity.
There are two types of injuries that are easily confused; strains which are used to describe injuries to muscles like the quads and tendons and sprains which involve ligaments. Although symptoms can be similar for both types of injuries, pain and mobility are often crucial factors in determining which is which to the untrained eye. Home care can be provided for both strains and sprains but it's always prudent to seek the advice of a trained medical professional if the symptoms don't subside within 24 hours after starting treatment.
If home care involving a pulled quad treatment ...
... plan is undertaken, it's vital to design the treatment plan to accommodate the severity of the injury so that sufficient time for a successful recovery is ensured. The first of the three severity level groupings is a Grade 1 injury which for a quad strain is characterized by mild, blunt pain if any at all, a feeling of tautness in the area of the thigh and a slight uneasiness when attempting locomotion. Pain is apparent with a Grade 2 injury and is usually present upon the start of physical movement of the affected limb. Swelling might be apparent with the possibility of bruising and the ability to bend the knee or extend the leg completely will be greatly hindered by pain. The last category is a Grade 3 injury which is distinguished by intense pain immediately after incurring the injury, with associated swelling within the first 24 hours and walking is impossible without the assistance of crutches or some other form of assistance.
Home care for pulled quad treatment will differ with the severity of injury. The usual protocol is rest, ice, compression and elevation which when used together is also known as the R.I.C.E. method. The first action of any treatment program is to remove any pressure from the affected part so that the recovery process can begin as soon as possible. It makes sense that severe injuries will require longer periods of time to recover. A common error is to skimp on the time element especially for serious injuries which could require weeks to recuperate rather than days. Apply ice to the target area every two to three hours while the injured limb is in a resting state. Make sure the ice remains firmly in place for at least 20 minutes and be sure that it's not placed directly on unprotected skin. Again, the severity of the injury should dictate how long the ice therapy should be maintained. This will help to diminish both any associated swelling and pain. Restricting the movement of the muscle itself is best done with a compression bandage which will also help control swelling if present.
Whenever you're administering pulled quad treatment or some other type of therapy from ankle sprains to muscle strains, the important thing to remember is to give your injury time to heal properly. Patience is all too often consigned to a secondary role when it comes to at-home therapy.
