When we say the word ‘cartoon’, the first thing that strikes our mind could be a funny character, or one of the favorite animation entertainments that we have recently watched on our television. However, there are different forms of cartoons which are used for different purposes. According to ancient definitions, cartoons are generally a form two dimensional that illustrates some kind of visual art. However, its meaning has changed over time. Hence, cartoons are generally considered non-realistic or semi-realistic drawing or painting intended for satire, caricature, or humor, or to the artistic style of such works.

Cartoons originated during the Middle East. Artist and painters used to prepare themselves to sketch a person or a thing through cartoons. Even today we find many artists are painting following the principle. As years passed until the nineteenth century cartoons referred to humorous illustrations in magazines and newspapers. Later in the twentieth century cartoons developed as comic strips and animated films. Speaking about comic books might remind us about a number of names. Some of these comic names keep ...
... running through our minds here and there.

Some of my favorite comic books that I read were Asterix and Obelix, twinkle comic books and many others. Some of these comics were brought out for kids to read. This made things easier to understand and interesting to see the pictures and understand. One of the advantages of comic books is that we could see the character in the book and read about it. This helped us remember things much better than reading a story in a normal book.

There are numerous number of cartoons that feature on our televisions today. While we have plenty of cartoons that feature especially for our kids, some of them like the ones that are presented by Walt Disney are popular worldwide. Especially, Tom and Jerry, Donald Duck which is the oldest of this feature even today on our televisions powered by FiOS TV. However, today there are many of these kinds. Cartoons programs are produced for entertaining different age groups. For example, there are special programs designed for kids starting from the age of five years and as they grow children can watch more cartoons pertaining to their age. Also there are cartoons for grownups as well.

Animation movies are in great demand in the modern world. With the advancement of technology and availability of High Definition TV, people are increasingly watching animated movies. This is because the clarity of the picture can be enjoyed mostly through animations. Animations involve graphic presentations and hence most people check their television clarity through these. Today, there are numerous cartoon movies like the Lion King, Kung fu Panda, Ice Age and many others. These cartoons are produced for all age groups.

Online games are animated and most of them involve cartoon characters. Most people young and old spend more time playing these games online. These games are of numerous kinds and creativity of these is growing at lightning speeds. Apart from all these cartoons are used for editorial purposes. Some of these could be very critical. However, cartoons are used to reduce the criticality of a particular information that is very sensitive to people. Due to these reasons some of the editors use this method to convey a piece of information. Some of the famous editorial cartoonists are Herblock, David Low, Jeff MacNelly, Mike Peters and Gerald Scarfe. Some of the best animated movies are Batman – Mask of the Phantasm, The Incredibles, Song of the South, Transformers, The Lion King, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Cars, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Watership Down, and Pom Poko.
