Five Steps To Finding A Decent Professional Coach Training Course
Due to the excessive growth in Professional Coaching, there exist numerous coach training courses. Here are five main points you should pay attention to when looking for a training course:
1. A decent training course teaches coaching
This may seem quite obvious to you, but mind that if anyone can easily be named a coach, then any courses may be easily called “coach training” ones. A lot of unprofessional trainers head unprofessional training courses and by that passing on their ill-natured “coaching”. Just search for a clearcut definition for “coaching”, free from its helping variations. So if your potential trainer cannot clearly state in which way his/her courses vary from other trainings of such a type, you should never deal with him/her and look for other options.
Make sure that your potential trainer is not just following his/her whim or just using the term “coaching” as an eye-catcher (as a marketing device). 2. A decent training course offers a lot practice and counseling.
A good education consists not of just reading something or listening to a lecture, it is rather a process of doing something. Make sure your course provides you with an opportunity of constant applying of your acquired skills in practice. More often you will e able to practice together with your coursemates.
As an extra practice, your course may boost a “Buddy Coach” relationship. It is great to work in a duet, but a trio work is even better, because an onlooker can give more explanation and support. Besides training with fellow trainees, make sure you are provided with an opportunity to get an assistance of a qualified coach. It may be the trainer him/herself, but more often you will be assisted by former graduates. You would want to deal with other professional trainers who will provide you with useful examples and skillfully demonstrate the work of a professional coach.
3. A decent training course provides you with a certificate.
Check whether the course you are willing to choose provides certification. If you want to obtain ICF certification, make sure your courses meet the ICF requirements.
For your certificate to be valid, it should include administrating and assessment of your working skills with real clients, for your “certificate of completion” does not assert your gained skills or the level of your coaching competence. It may be compared to going through traffic school and passing a written test.
If you ask whether you need a certificate of not, my answer will probably be: maybe!
Perhaps you already have a lot of diplomas and letters of recommendation and your clients usually do not demand you to prove your competence or qualification. If so, certification is not of a great necessity to you. Coach training however is essential.
But still getting a certificate, you enlarge your chances to become a qualified professional and demonstrate your devotion to high standards to your potential clients, which may prove to be useful in many areas, such as marketing.
4. a decent training course prepares you to practice.
Unfortunately, it is a common mistake of today’s coach trainers to focus mainly on the theoretical basis of the case, leaving their trainees absolutely helpless when it comes to applying the obtained skills on practice. Among the skills your trainer should provide you with are: perception and evaluation processes, client forms and contract samples, samples of fee structures and service delivery systems, etc. Although all this may seem to be the least interesting aspect of coaching activity, all this is important for creating a solid business. If your potential trainer doesn’t provide you with all this information, you will not be able to make a good coach no matter how talented and skillful you are.
5. A decent training course helps you to enroll clients.
You can’t do anything if you don’t have clients for your business, not even make a living. Your potential trainers should have a rich experience in merchandising their services and applying their skills on practice and should be able to pass all their experience on to you.
