Home Owners Saved More Than 500 Billion Pounds Due To Low Interest Rates

The profit is equivalent to around £50,000 per borrower. It is almost matched by the loss in interest which was suffered by the users. In the three years to December in the previous year, a total of £1,328bn in interest was paid by mortgage holder – Bank’s data further says. But, the total mortgage interest payments were £1,897bn in the last three years, before the Bank slashed rates to 0.5pc in March 2009. For each of UK’s 11.2m mortgages, the difference is £569bn or an average of £50,820. Between January 2006 and December 2008, a total amount of £975bn was saved by the savers. But their income was £496bn over the following three years, which was a clear fall of £479bn.
The interest rates were started cutting by monetary policy of the Bank of England, as a response to increasing credit crisis in December 2007. At this time Bank Rate was decreased from 5.75pc to 5.5pc. The fall of 2pc a year later had been witnessed in the rate. The rate was cut in March 2009 to its current historic low of 0.5pc. The effect was more extreme on borrowers as they were less ac compared to the savers. Bank rate was charged by the average lifetime tracker in the three years to December 2007, as per SPF Private Clients. Therefore, the rate that was actually paid that time was 6.2pc. But the interest rate paid is just 1.2pc as the Bank Rate fell to 0.5pc. The result was that monthly repayments on average £250,000 lifetime trackers mortgage have sloped from £1,292 to £250 in the usual year. The director general of Saga Ros Altmann said, "Official policy is to take money from people who have it and give it to those who borrowed too much. As savers tend to be older people, this amount to a huge intergenerational transfer of wealth.” He added, "We should be very worried about the message this is sending. We are saying you are a mug if you save, but if you have over-borrowed we will bail you out." In the period before the credit crisis, the average rate on an instant access Isa was 4.85 pc as compared to 1.52 pc over the past three years, according to the reports of some data companies.
