Converting a cellar or basement has many benefits. It can increase the value of your home when you eventually come to sell, it can offer additional space to live in, and it enables you to make the most of every bit of space your property has. It can also negate the need to extend a property outwards simply to enjoy some extra room. With effective cellar tanking and a good quality conversion you can enjoy the addition of a comfortable and good looking additional floor in your home.

Cellar tanking is a form of waterproofing your basement that will ensure everything is kept dry. Not only does this mean that the atmosphere in your newly converted basement will be more pleasant but it means that you won't have to pay for regular repairs caused by damp and wet in the walls and structure of the building. It is an important consideration in any conversion. Cellar damp can arise for a number of reasons. Broken or burst pipes can quickly cause damage but even the natural build up of soil and earth leaning against the outside of the cellar wall can lead to damp problems.

The biggest potential problem when converting the cellar ...
... level is that the conversion will usually mean that earth is able to collect. This will collect against the outside wall of the property and as water passes into the earth, it is then soaked up by the wall. This will seep through the porous bricks of the wall, into the wooden structure, and beyond into the property itself unless you protect the building from such problems. Cellar tanking provides a method of protection that is effective and efficient.

Cellar tanking usually requires the placement of a physical barrier around a wall. Ideally, this barrier should be placed outside the property once the surface of the wall has been thoroughly prepared. The tanking medium that is used will prevent the soil from actually touching the bricks and it will not soak up water and moisture. This means that no moisture is then able to pass through into the main building and the primary structure remains safe and dry.
