Manali – Named After Manu, The Law Giver
There is an interesting story about origin of Manali. One day Varvasvata who was the seventh incarnation of Manu found a tiny fish in his bathing water. The fish said to him to look after it with great devotion for one day it will do him a great service. The seventh Manu cared for the fish till the day it grew so huge that he released it into the sea. Before departing, the fish warned Manu of an impending deluge when the entire world would be submerged and bade him to build a sea worthy ark. Finally when the flood came, Varvasvata and seven sages who were with him were towed to safety by the fish. As the water subsided the ark of seventh Manu came to rest on a hill side. After flood was over a place of enchanting beauty arose from there. This place was named Manali after Manu.
