What You Should Understand About The Karate Uniform

Anyone who decideds to join a martial arts class, to grow into a trained and disciplined fighter, is going to need their own special karate uniform that they can wear throughout training and during sparring sessions. This unique looking outfit, known as the karategi, is practically as old as Karate itself and has been worn by students for centuries now. Since the karategi has managed to survive the test of time and is still heavily used today, it provides a link to the past, to the days of the original karate masters.

There is no set color or material for the karategi, but more often than not, you will be seeing them in all white and made out of breathable cotton, which is light enough to allow for advanced movement. The materials used to construct one of these uniforms is supposed to be thick enough to absorb the fighter's sweat and protect them from bodily abrasions, but they also have to be thin enough to allow air to pass through freely and allow the fighter to move with less restriction.

... which includes three unique pieces. You must be able to get around well and put out some extreme kicks, so the pants are generally very loose fitting. The jacket nearly resembles a really short bathrobe, because it folds over itself in the front the same way a bathrobe does.

Nothing about this outfit is quite as significant as the belt that keeps it all together, because it has the deepest meaning and serves the greatest purpose. The belt comes in a variety of colors and can be marked with different colored stripes, to mark a fighter's rank, which can be very telling of their level of skill and the kinds of techniques they are learning and already know. Black belts are considered the belts of the masters because the lowest ranks start out with light colored belts and are given gradually darker colors as they move through the ranks.

It almost seems like a shame that so many martial arts pupils don their karategi all the time without ever knowing what it stands for. The more you know about the karate uniform and why it is important to the sport, you tend to appreciate it much more and feel even closer to the roots of the ancient art you are now learning to master.
