Photo backgrounds could range from the plain white cloth on the backyard, an old house, trees and plants on the park, the blue sky, the powdery white sand on the beach, animals from the zoo and a whole lot more. Choosing the right photo background will help you ace the theme that you want to portray for the photo that you are composing. Selecting correct photo backgrounds is a big challenge to photographers and it also serves an opportunity to have full control over the final photo. Photo backgrounds make a subject stand out and puts it in context and in a way that highlighting the subject wonderfully but sometimes, most photo backgrounds can overwhelm the subject you are shooting and will be more of a distraction.

There are no definite and concrete rules when it comes to deciding what to include or exclude from the photo background. There is no perfect formula for selecting the perfect photo background, ...
... but there are guidelines on selecting and perfecting them.

Backgrounds are meant be just as it is; a background. It is not meant to steal the spotlight away from the main subject. So always check the scene before click the shutter release. You wouldn't want to see a donkey taking a poo on the background while you are taking a graduation picture. Though it is amusing to look at, it just isn't right. Elements such as these, distracts the viewer from the main subject. Always scan the background of your shots before taking a picture. If there are distracting elements, then eliminate it. If it is not possible to eliminate the distracting elements in the background, then the second thing that you need to do is to move your subject. Moving your subject is once a simple technique but is the first thing you should consider as it is possible that by moving the subject you will be able to hide the distraction in the background.

If you still have the distracting elements in the background and you can’t move your subject (or even after moving the subject) another strategy is to move yourself and shoot from a new angle. You can shoot from down low or shoot from above depending on the situation. One of the feature of most digital cameras is it can blur out the background by raising the aperture of the camera or by shooting on a long focal length.

Choosing the right photo background is not rocket science. All you need is careful planning and a keen eye for details to check whether the background will fit to the subject being shot.
