There are two ways in which urinal mats save lives. First, they prevent the sort of slip and fall in a public or private restroom, or any other place with a lot of urine, wherever that may be, but the sort of slip and fall accidents that result in grievous harm and death to the person suffering the accident.

The second way in which urinal mats save lives is that, for some of us, falling down and getting covered in urine that would otherwise be securely absorbed a urinal mat would surely prompt attempted suicide in the very short term afterwards. To this end, urinal mats protect the average, every day, unassuming citizen who is just hanging out in some urine-soaked environs, and myself, a person with above-average concerns about being covered in warm, sticky urine.

While the presence of a puddle of pee should, to my way of thinking, be sufficient cause to contact Homeland Security about a bio-terror risk, we in the United States enjoy a culture of not-snitching, and as such, many of these issues get brushed under the mat, as it were. Instead, though, we are a litigious people, and frivolous lawsuits abound. Imagine, if you will, the elation of some litigious soul upon receiving a slight fall, a harmless bump, clothes soaked in urine and the subsequent furious telephone call to the first lawyer who pops up on a simple internet search from their also-soaked smart phone, which now smells like pee. That is a lawsuit that will crush a small business, one that simply cannot afford to pay another lawyer to go toe-to-toe with the sort of educated carrion bird who would take a slip-and-fall case involving copious amounts of human urine.

For the latter group, I am not sure that there are any members other than myself. Logic tells me that there must be other people out there, somewhere, who find themselves paralyzed with dread and an existential angst when confronted with a filthy public restroom, something featuring a distinct puddle of urine. Someday, I will find these others, start a small society, a secret society, at that, and dedicate our union to purging the world of dirty and disease-ridden things in public or common spaces. Until then, though, I will crusade alone, and pontificate endlessly upon the concerns of a 36 year-old man who has a problem with dirty things.

If I were to slip and fall, I fear I would, in that split-second, try to keep myself dry, rather than protect my head and vital organs from colliding fiercely with the wet ground. Ironically, this may see me move in to the first category of persons whose lives have been spared by the presence of awesome, dry urinal mats. Regardless, it would be the sort of thing my therapist would quickly tire of hearing, and while he doodles well on his little yellow pad, I am hesitant to imagine the sorts of things he would draw during week 17 of our sessions. Let us all just buy urinal mats, and hope for the best.
