Laser printers need tender loving care just like computers. Maintaining a laser printer does not take a lot of time, and it can be done by anyone who can follow simple instructions. It is recommended that the maintenance procedure be conducted at least monthly. The advantage of having a properly maintained printer is it is less likely to have been missing lines and smears on the print.

Maintenance Procedure

The manual that is included in your printer package also has some tips on how to properly maintain your printer it is better if you check it, moreover. Here are the common printer maintenance procedures:

1. Remove the printer’s connections. It is a standard operating procedure on printer maintenance to remove the AC cord from the outlet and also detach the cables or wires that connect your printer to the computer.

2. Let your printer cool for at least half an hour. Some components of the printer become hot while printing. You may place your printer in a well ventilated are so that it will cool easily. You may also use a fan just make sure that the surrounding air is not too cold. It is not beneficial ...
... if you expose your printer to sudden changes in temperature.

3. Remove the trays of your printer. Refer to your instruction manual to know how to do it properly, or else you may damage your trays.

4. Remove the printer’s cartridges. Again, consult your instruction manual on how to do it properly especially if there is a lock in your cartridges. Do not expose the cartridges into the sunlight. Place it in a dark plastic or wrap it in a piece of clean paper. Be careful not to drop, shake, or tip it; these may cause your cartridge to leak. Leak from cartridges can blemish cloths, carpet, and other materials made of fabric.

5. Clean the interior. When cleaning the interior it is a good practice to clean areas, which are hard to reach. You may use a small and soft bristle paintbrush and be gentle when doing this. For the easy to reach and flat surfaces you may use a dry cloth to remove the dirt and dust.

6. Remove dirt buildup from rollers. It would be better if you can detach the rollers from the printer. In addition, inspect the rollers for signs of wear and tear. Worn out rollers can cause paper jams, or it would not load the papers properly.

7. Clean the exterior. The exterior should be cleaned with a damp cloth. Refrain from using chemical based surfactants. Nowadays, there are many available cleaning kits that can be used that do not damage the printer exterior. You may check the nearest IT store to see if they have one.

8. Use only the manufacturer' recommended toner. Whenever you add or replace a toner for a laser printer, do not use substandard toners. The price of substandard may be lower than the recommended toners but their quality is also lower, and they may cause problems in the printer’s hardware.

Taking proper care of your printer gives it a longer economic life and reduces the possibility of having a breakdown so save money on parts and labor fees.
