Office desks form the backbone of any office design scheme. Aside from being the largest piece of office furniture and the visual centre of the office, your desk is where you will likely be spending the vast majority of your time in the office. Thus it is essential to ensure that your desk is optimised to increase your efficiency in the workplace.
As a rule, it is always better to opt for too little rather than too much. For instance, select office desks that just suit your needs for desk space. This might include space for your computer, a dedicated writing space, and an area for a telephone. The majority of desks are much larger than they actually need to be, and lead to endless and unnecessary document hoarding and storage.
In this way, a smaller desk can become something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you have a limited amount of space to store documents and files on the surface of your desk, you will only store the most important documents there, and learn to store the rest electronically or off-site. If you have an over-abundance of storage space on the surface of your desk, you will start keeping everything, ...
... whether it’s important or not, and your desk will quickly start to get extremely cluttered. This will definitely be detrimental to your organisation and your office performance.
One essential feature that you’ll want to look for in office desks, and which will have a direct impact on your workplace performance, is how much organisational capacity your desk contains. For instance, consider the drawers present in the office. What types of drawers does it have, and how are they divided up? Ideally, your office desk should organise everything that you need throughout the day so that you have everything within arm’s reach without needing to think about where it is.
The one type of office furniture for which this maxim does not apply is dedicated storage furniture, such as filing cabinets. When you’re designing your office, you never know how much you’ll ultimately need to store in them, and so it’s often better to overestimate. At the end of the day, a bit of empty space in your filing cabinet is definitely preferable to essential files scattered all over your office because there is no more room in your filing cabinets.
Additionally, when selecting or position office furniture, don’t underestimate the value of empty space, or the value of including non-work items in your office. If you optimise the space in your office with intelligently designed and positioned office furniture, you create the ability to include something like a houseplant or another interesting office touch. Not only can this make your office more attractive, but having non-work items in your office has been shown to make work more enjoyable and less stressful.
Get creative with it. When you’re considering new office desks, really get into it and think about all the way’s that the desk and the layout of your office furniture in general, can impact your productivity at work. Only opt for the furniture which makes the greatest positive impact on your workplace efficacy.
