Label printers are widely categorised into desktop label printers, commercial label printers and industrial label printers. They are managed by in built software which is used to create, edit or format the labels. For home use or small office use even handheld label printers are available which are very cost effective.

A thermal label printer uses thermal roll as paper to print images and words on it. They are used in POS systems by thermal printer which exposes the paper to heat and an image is produced on it. Thermal rolls are heat sensitive papers and have special coating which produces black colour on exposure to heat. It has to be protected from environmental exposure to UV and direct sunlight. Previously only black colour was used but now even red and blue colours are produced. It comes in contact with the thermal head which heats the section and then passes through a plate which feeds the paper further it passes through a spring which compresses the thermo-sensitive paper and then to the controller boards which controls the mechanism of the thermal printers.

The health hazards of thermal printers are high as it uses heat radiation to heat the paper. The print or the image on such paper fades away with over exposure to sunlight and UV light.

A successful POS is conducted only after the receipt is received by the customer which can be printed through direct heating or thermal heating
