Many people fail to give credit to just how much time and effort proper dog training and socialisation can take! Getting a new puppy is not a weekend adventure, it is much more like giving birth to a new baby than people realise. Well, even if puppy training does come with less nappy changing, it is still a lot of effort – today we check out ten pet accessories and general dog supplies that can make training a new puppy like a walk in the park.
1. Dog crate
Keeping your new puppy in a dog crate helps prevent many unwanted behaviours that can develop, uncorrected, while you’re at work. Of course, it will take a little bit of time to train your dog to USE this pet accessory to begin with!
2. Anti-bark collars
Barking is a difficult habit to curb. Imagine we tried to train you not to talk to people! Anti-bark collars are a fantastic training aid as they provide instant correction. All good models are completely cruelty free.
3. Obedience classes
While not technically ‘pet accessories’, obedience classes are an invaluable service. They provide YOU with knowledge and tips to help train ...
... your dog with as little fuss and second-guessing as possible. They also provide socialisation!
4. Muzzle
Some dogs, although they might not be aggressive, have a keen sense of pack order and maintaining it. A muzzle is a pet supply that can help keep other dogs safe while socialising your pup or adult dog.
5. Clicker
One of Victoria Stilwell’s favourite training tools! The clicker is used as positive reinforcement; initially with treats following immediately afterwards, later on it is used by itself. It is a distinctive sound which is not easily confused by your pup.
6. Doggie toys
A bored dog is a naughty dog! There are a huge variety of dog toys available nowadays, many of which are ‘primed’ with treats to encourage your dog to play with them.
7. Lead and harness
Once again … bored dogs are naughty dogs! Exercise is a necessity for all dogs, though some need more kilometres than others. A good lead and harness are essential pet supplies for exercising your dog, helping him burn off excess energy and focus on training.
8. Check chains
When used only in necessary situations and followed up with appropriate interactive training, check chains are an excellent tool for training your dog to learn to walk with you. Use a check chain after your pup is 6 months old and remove the flat collar before putting the chain on.
9. Car restraints
Essential for both yours and your dog’s safety in the car, car restraints are initially used to train your pup to sit still in the car and not jump into your lap. Later, they are used to protect HIM against other road users’ actions!
10. Treat pouches
Watch how much attention your dog pays to you when you put a treat pouch around your waist! Great for the initial stages of puppy training when they are highly distractible.
Don’t do yourself the disservice of trying to train your dog without the right pet accessories!
