8 Dog Supplies To Stop You’re Dog Barking
Barking is one of the most destructive habits that dogs can develop. Your dog’s incessant barking will slowly destroy your sleep quality, your sanity, your relationship with your neighbours and eventually also your good relationship with your dog. Yet barking can be problematic to solve. Today we explore some of the pet accessories and other dog supplies that can help you carry out your anti-barking plan.
Before you begin reading, though, it is important to formulate a plan for stopping your dog barking! Fit these pet supplies into your plan, don’t tailor your plan to the supplies.
Spray Bottle
Spray bottles are used for shocking your dog or creating an unpleasant sensation, without actually hurting them or making them fearful of you. You’d use them after each instance of inappropriate barking. We don’t recommend filling them with vinegar or garlic as these substances can irritate your dog’s eyes and nose.
Citronella Spray Collars
This type of anti-barking collar is an automatic version of the spray bottle. Although it is convenient, it shouldn’t be used while you are at home – ...
... it is more effective to correct the dog yourself if you are available than to depend on pet accessories.
Anti-Bark Collars
These noise-activated collars create an unpleasant electrical sensation for the dog. Many dog trainers consider them the most effective pet accessory or tool for anti-barking training; dogs are generally more averse to the sensation than they are to citronella sprays.
Fencing
Sometimes, the type of fencing around your home can be a barking trigger. If you have slatted fencing, your dog might bark whenever he sees another dog or person walking by. If you have solid fencing, your dog might bark because he can hear but not see who is there. Experiment with some temporary solutions before you replace your entire fence!
Toys and Attention
Barking behaviours frequently originate from boredom, or feelings of isolation. Pet accessories like simple toys, a walk or a bit of attention can help solve the problem. However, be careful not to actually reinforce the barking behaviour by offering the toy or walk immediately after the dog barks – he’ll learn that it gets him a reward .
Treats
Once your dog is silent for some time, you can start to reinforce the positive behaviour of silence using dog supplies like liver treats.
Dog Training Book
Whenever you embark on a major re-training project with your dog, it can be helpful to refresh on dog psychology. There are a hundred little changes you can make to effective barking plans which will render them ineffective, and a dog training manual from a pet supplies store can help you fit the training into the overall logic of a doggie’s brain!
Additionally, you should NOT use the following pet accessories as training aids when you are trying to stop your dog from barking!
A lead and/or harness: If you use the lead to pull your dog to you for punishment when he barks, the lead will be associated with punishment and unpleasant times. You don’t want to ruin the joy of walk time!
Clicker: These are simply not unpleasant enough to use as negative reinforcement.
Make your plan, carry it out, and hopefully find success with the help of the right pet accessories!
