There was a time when there were forests in which elephants roamed freely, deer moved in groups, birds flocked together, the cat family had their own territories, fishes had free reign to water. But now, due to the increase in civilization animals are forced to move from a habitat which has been their home for years. Often I have heard people who have homes near forests grumble about animals disrupting their area. But no one stops and think that it is not is not animals that are disrupting our homes but the other way round. We take their places build homes and live there. So, what will animals do when they don’t have any place to go? They will try coming back to the area where their homes have been for years.

There is a greater danger coming up in the future due to these dwindling forests- extinction of animals. How many of us have seen tigers? Do we even know what bonobos are? Have we ever seen a turtle swim in water? Maybe we would have seen them in various animal programs on our television or browsed them through internet. We might also have seen them in zoos behind locked cages, but how many of us have seen them ...
... live. I am sure apart from people who have gone on safaris where these particular animals live; we would not have seen them anywhere else? Have anyone ever wondered about the possibility of our younger generation never seeing these animals? These animals may come in history lesson rather than biology at the rate they are dwindling!

There has also been a fascination for dinosaurs. Many have wondered how these animals lived all those years ago, about their life style, if they lived around the world, their food habits, etc. we though there is a lot of factual information, we still wish we had seen these animals. Now the wish list of animals that we would have likes to see before they had become extinct is small. Slowly, the same wish list is going to get longer and longer in the coming years.

There are other extinct animals like the Tasmanian wolf. It is not really a wolf and is a family of kangaroos. It is a carnivorous marsupial animal. Though they are reportedly extinct, there have been rumors of sightings over the years which were never confirmed or recorded. Dodos are another famous species that are extinct. They were killed for their meat by hungry sailors and their domesticated animals like monkeys and rats fed on their eggs. The last dodo which was killed is around 1681. The charismatic Irish deer also comes under the category of extinct animals. They were gigantic and their horns were equally big shaped like fiery fires which were as long as 10 feet! How can we forget the saber tooth tigers? They look more ferocious and scary than black jaguars! The word “saber” means a curved sword and their teeth are exactly shaped like that! They lived almost 20 million years back and became extinct 10,000 years back roughly. There are many more animals, birds and fishes which have graced our earth once upon a time are now history.

The other major cause is pollution. We cannot try to stop them completely, but what can be done bring it down by avoiding un-necessary pollution. Going green and avoiding plastics is a start! So, let us try to bring down the rate of endangered species. Let us all join hands in preserving forests and most importantly the animals living in them so that the coming generations won’t just learn about animals but also gets to see them! If you are really interested in providing your help to conserve, you can research on them through internet. Now, you can even get numbers of professionals and talk to them through your and become a part of their organization.
