Simple Tips To Minimize Wastage Of Resources At Home
Every day, we see a multitude of ‘’Save the Earth” slogans around us; on the television, Newspaper, Internet etc. Honestly speaking, if we are to save the earth, each one of us has to take the initiative and contribute to the better of our surroundings. You don’t have to be a social activist to save the environment. Yet you can do your part by minimizing the home wastages.
Reducing the use of resourcesWhen you buy provisions, make sure that you purchase them in bulk. Instead of buying in small quantities that involves more packing and things, it is better to buy things in bulk. Besides getting at a cheaper price (if you buy in larger quantities), you also save the resources like paper, plastic cans, plastic bags etc. which could otherwise go as a waste.
ReuseDon’t discard things after using them. Everything might serve some purpose in life. Before you throw things into the garbage, ask any of your friends or neighbors and see if there is any reuse center in your area. You can refer the websites using any of the high-speed Internet connections such as the FiOS Internet ...
... and get the contact details of the local reuse centre. You can even find them from your telephone directory. Old electronic items, useless gadgets in unsellable conditions can all be sent to the reuse centre.
Opt for reusable items
Instead of using sponge and other temporary use-ups to clean the household items, it would be better to use wash clothes for the same. The clothes after being used can be washed and used repeatedly over a period of time. Moreover, buying one or two wash clothes is cheaper compared to the other disposable cleaning stuff. This will also help save a good amount of money in the long run. Likewise, use cloth napkins for paper substitutes to clean your things.
Most people have the habit of collecting polythene bags (got from shopping). As we all know, polythene and plastic bags are harmful to the environment. So, it’s better to invest in one good recyclable bag. Choose the material that can withstand greater weights and use them for shopping. You may ask your grandparents how long these bags will last and they will tell you how many years they used their bags! Imagine if all of us start practicing it, we can save a lot of resource wastage.
Replace all the plastic bags in your kitchen with plastic containers. The containers are long lasting, more durable, air-tight, reduce odors, and to a great extent prevent the entry of moths and bacteria in the food. This is one good way to preserve food while saving the resources.
Food
Food wastage is one problem that we have to avoid completely. A recent American data suggested that each person throws away almost 163 pounds of food every year. Just imagine how much food is being dumped out every year by people all over the world. The best way to avoid food wastage is by knowing and deciding how much you can eat. If too much food is being prepared and left over in a function or at large family gatherings, then you may do a bit of charity by giving the unused food to orphanages. What doesn’t get into our stomach might fill theirs!
Left out food can also be used for Vermicompost. Worms like the earthworms that feed only on organic materials help to minimize the garbage disposals to some extent. A good alternative would be to use the tea bags, egg shell, peeled skin of vegetables etc in your garden. They are very nutritious for the plants. Instead of putting them in the garbage, you can always use them for your garden and enhance the growth of your plants.
Thus, nothing in the world is a waste! Everything serves a purpose of its own even after it has been used. Simple things like these can make the environment and the surroundings greener and make the earth a healthier and better place to live!
