Top Music Celebrities To Perform During The 2012 Preakness Stakes

The infield at Pimlico Race Course on Preakness Stakes day has for decades been the scene of one of the best parties in Thoroughbred racing. It dates back to the days when patrons were allowed to bring their own alcoholic beverages, making it a top destination for college students and other young people in the region.

In fact, in later years, the Preakness became known in college circles as the “freakness” for its wild party atmosphere. Though outside alcohol was ultimately banned from the Pimlico infield in 2008, the Maryland Jockey Club is continuing to market the Preakness to a younger audience.

To that end, it was announced this week that the infield entertainment at the 2012 Preakness Stakes will include performances by a pair of Grammy-nominated artists—rock band Maroon 5 and rapper Wiz Khalifa.

InfieldFest, as the event Preakness infield party was re-branded following the alcohol ban, will also include a second stage of live music. As for the beverage situation, fans will again be allowed to purchase a souvenir mug in the infield for $20 that will also include unlimited refills of beer. ...

“InfieldFest is all about first-class music for the region's most celebrated party,” said Maryland Jockey Club President Tom Chuckas. “The Preakness infield has become a rite of passage for generations in the mid-Atlantic region.”

The MJC made an interesting decision with regards to Wiz Khalifa being part of the headlining entertainment. He is a strong and well-known proponent for the legalization of marijuana and, as has been pointed out by other media outlets, was in fact once nominated as “Stoner of the Year” by High Times magazine.

While the addition of Khalifa may certainly ruffle some feathers among racing's old-guard establishment, it seems the Maryland Jockey Club should be given some credit for selecting artists that are at least relevant to the younger generation. Preakness day provides Maryland racing's biggest stage and its best opportunity to draw in new fans to the sport.

The 2012 Preakness Stakes will be run on May 19.
